EBR deputies investigating fight at Mall of Louisiana

East Baton Rouge Parish sheriff’s deputies Saturday night investigated what appeared to be a large fight involving as many as 200 juveniles in the Mall of Louisiana food court as well as outside the mall, a sheriff’s spokeswoman said.

Deputies responded around 6 p.m. to a report of fighting at the mall, Casey Rayborn Hicks said in a news release.

No injuries or weapons being drawn were reported, Hicks said.

Deputies have evidence that shows who started the fight and those people will be arrested and booked into Parish Prison on fistic encounter, Hicks said late Saturday.

Marcus Jenkins, 17, and Jerry Johnson, 16, both of Baton Rouge, said they were hanging out with friends at the mall when they saw a large crowd of people running out of the mall and decided to follow them.

Jenkins said he heard there was a big fight and possibly a shooting, but he did not see anything happening, except the stampede out the door.

“This is about the craziest thing I ever seen,” Johnson said.

Shane Ash, 30, of Central, said he was with his wife, daughter and parents in the Build-A-Bear when they heard “a stampede of people above us.”

As that was happening Ash said, the cashier closed the gate to the front of the store and brought everyone to the very rear of the store for about 15 minutes.

He said he walked to the gate out of curiosity.

“For about 10 minutes, there were still people running everywhere,” Ash said, adding half of the people in the crowd were “screaming in terror and half were giggling and running like it was a joke.”

Law enforcement authorities stepped in and diverted all juveniles to the open area between BJ’s Brewhouse and Bravo restaurants outside the mall. The youths were to remain at that location until their parents arrived to pick them up, Hicks said.

Deputies and mall security personnel worked with the large crowd outside, reminding juveniles to call their parents for rides home, but preventing the youths from running across Mall of Louisiana Boulevard to the Rave Cinema.

Some parents drove by, trying to locate their children in the crowd, while other parents and relatives tried to pull into the parking lots so they could search afoot for their offspring.

Others parents parked at the Rave Cinema and other stores across the boulevard and walked to the mall.

According to reports heard on a police scanner after the incident, groups of juveniles streamed from the Mall of Louisiana to Perkins Rowe, reportedly causing more disturbances at Perkins Rowe.

Deputies were told a social media post about a flash mob at the mall may have drawn a crowd to the area, Hicks said.

Keaneu Eaton, 17, of Baton Rouge, said the incident did not involve a flash mob, but started with an Instagram “meet and greet” invitation so Instagram users could meet up with their followers. He said he and other friends shared the Instagram post of others and spread the word.

Nick Brown, 17, of Baton Rouge, who accompanied Eaton outside the Rave Cinema, said the meet and greet had no violent intent, it was just a chance for them to have a friendly meeting with people with whom they connected via the Internet.

The unruly gathering caused major traffic jams in and around the mall, Hicks said.

Traffic contraflow was put in place from Bluebonnet Boulevard by Chase Bank to Picardy Avenue/Mall of Louisiana Boulevard, Hicks said.

Baton Rouge police and State Police responded to help sheriff’s deputies with the heavy traffic on Bluebonnet out to Perkins Road and near Interstate 10.

Authorities released the traffic controls to allow vehicles to travel regularly at about 7:50 p.m., while deputies continued their investigation of the incident, according to reports heard on the police scanner.

A similar incident at the Mall of Louisiana about a year ago led to the shootings of two teenagers, Hicks has said.

The shooting happened at about 9:30 p.m. Jan. 7 when one teenager fired a weapon into a crowd during an argument with other teens, Hicks reported at the time.

The bullets struck two teenage bystanders, who were taken to a hospital with injuries that Hicks described as non life-threatening.

Two 17-year-olds were indicted Feb. 29 on attempted murder charges in the shootings.

An East Baton Rouge Parish grand jury charged Johnny Williams, 11246 Cypress Glen Ave., Baton Rouge; and Michael Leneal Burrell, 501 Crosley Drive, Baker, with two counts each of attempted first-degree murder in that case.

Burrell allegedly supplied Williams with the gun that Williams is accused of using in the shooting, an affidavit of probable cause states. Burrell also is accused of being involved in the argument that led to the shooting and for giving Williams a ride afterward, the affidavit says.

Mall of Louisiana management had planned to hire off-duty sheriff’s deputies for increased night patrols on Saturday evenings after the two teenagers were shot, Hicks has said.

The mall is located on private property, but the Sheriff’s Office provides security assistance, Hicks has said.

The ideal situation would be to nip this in the bud--stop the assembling before it got to 200 kids in the food court at dinner time, since they were announcing it on Instagram. There are systems that can monitor the critical keywords and flag posts that signal trouble—in real time. My company, JackBe, created just this kind of monitoring set-up for the combined security details at a large, national sporting event last year Indianapolis last January. You can read about what we did here: http://bit.ly/WzzdVD

Chucky, I went. I read. I remain unimpressed. Your autoerotic back-slapping and the feeble attempt to confine the discussion to terms more comfortable for you just don't make for a grown-up style of discourse. Confining your "advice" to one group, the one that doesn't involve you, is lazy, pointless and more than a little cowardly. My challenge remains. Sort out your own lot, then preach to the "other" group. But that's a non-starter. The white monsters out there have nothing to fear from you and your lot, do they.

Chucky, you're more-or-less correct about my use of the "Oh yea but what about..."cry, and for that I must apologize, for I may have plagiarized a technique being perfected by "the right". Just ask one of your ideological brethren Whatnow, who practices it relentlessly. Nevertheless, my point remains valid, even if it's an inconvenience for you to read in this particular series of comments. And the point is the sheer stupidity of attributing the misbehavior of a few self-styled gangsters to anyone other than ... a few self-styled gangsters. Here's an idea: you, as a member of the class that includes numerous American mass murderers and serial killers, begin by correcting their potential for misdeeds. You are, after all, responsible for their behavior, since you are bound by the same class. Then, when you're all done with that, proceed to show another class how to be as successful with their own subspecies of lowlifes. Good luck with that!

Protean – you are correct to point out the mass shooting caused by White students or ex-students as other posters are correct about the race of the mob at MOL which is the topic. You are doing the “Oh yea but what about” cry, if you would like to discuss White shooting's and crime write a letter I am sure you will get many post.

This just in: "Ala. teen accused of planning school bomb attack." (Google it). Columbine, Aurora, Newtown, Chardon, Tucson ... just to name a few of the more recent incidents. Look at the photos. When will this country realize it has a serious white kid problem? When will that community stop whining and start taking responsibility for their own kind? When will the arc of their finger-pointing end up directed at only themselves? Yeah, they must find something or someone else to blame. Let 'em whip up some ad hoc lists and statistics so they'll feel better about blaming the government or, more easily, "those" people. Feed 'em more of that good ol' media-baked fear and hatred. Makes it soooooo much easier.

Bored teenagers seeking adventure and excitement, misbehaving and causing a disturbance is nothing new. Each generation has experienced such. Now we see it in increasing degrees. As population grows and communications get better how could this be avoided? Parenting goes only so far when it comes to the behavior of teens and their unbounded energy and need to express their pre-adult selves as unique and independent of parental authority. I'm approaching senior citizen status, but I can recall such feelings and am surprised that some commenters here cannot. The real question is what is our community providing for these teenagers to direct this energy in a more constructive way? What could these teens been doing instead of what they did? What sort of activity was available to them that could provide the excitement they craved? These teens are the adults of the near future and if we really care where our community is going, we had better make a real effort on their behalf or face the consequences. Punishment is not the answer, but redirection is. There is much these young people can contribute if properly directed. It is up to the community to provide that direction. This is not a problem that we can run away from like some here think by moving to another community as it will follow you wherever you go until it is properly recognized and addressed.

200 people? What, was it like a rumble, like in the Outsiders? Also, why bring race into this? Did I read a different article? Race was not mentioned in this at all. Besides, back in the day in high school, I saw several large fights involving nothing but white kids. Is this a problem with the "white community"? Of course not. There's no such thing. This isn't about race. It's about being young and stupid, which we all were at some point. Sure, some never outgrow the stupid aspect but, judging from some of the comments, that has nothing to do with race either.

I do agree NearBarbarian – that most and the majority of black youth are not gang bangers or 'bad' and many have won top honers in education and civic community service. I am just worried that Peer pressure is coming from the bottom up and not from the top down. I hope 2013 will bring a better relationship with all community members and the few bad apples do not spoil the barrel.

No mention of race means they are black. Just like no mention of party affiliation and they are Dems. It is called covering for your ideologies failures by not reporting the FULL news.

14) Comment by The_Host - 07/01/2013

If no mention of race is made one can 99.9% of the time be sure it is because they are black and the PC news can't have them making themselves look even worse. Just like when a Liberal Dem Politician does something wrong you never see their party affiliation listed for some reason. It's called a double standard. Just like arresting police and not putting up their names and addresses like anyone else. The liberal media, it's not so much what they say as it is what the leave out all together that is pertinent to the whole story. I read that 2 days after the school shooting last month a off duty cop shot a man down in San Antonio who had just show his girlfriend then proceeded to the theater next door and was shot before he could kill anyone. Seems that an armed individual can indeed stop evil. Go figure.

Let me preface, im not racist, i work with all races, and i am married to a girl of a different race. however, Sometimes stereotypes are true, that goes for all races. I was at the mall sat. Night with my wife and 2 year old. As for my direct experience there, We walked through 2 different groups of black teens, they were blocking the way in front of a store and would not move when my wife tried pushing the stroller with our child through, even when she politely said excuse me. It wasnt until i stepped in and told these kids excuse me in a deep voice that they moved, the next group of white teens, we did mo have that problem. Obviously certain types of people are raised with different attitudes and respect, i notice from being in healthcare and seeing these types of families, and being out in baton rouge the last few years, that most blacks are disrespectful and do not know how to act in public. As for the mall if you are going to let these little monkeys rum around you better have security. It was evident before the fight that most of those dont know how to act

17) Comment by blisterpeanuts - 06/01/2013

That many kids in one place usually means trouble, at least in big American cities. I've lived in countries in east Asia however where hundreds of youth congregate but don't get drunk or high, don't vandalize, don't curse at strangers or utter racist slurs, and are respectful toward adults. My mother told me of an incident in the early 1950s when some college students created a disturbance on the train, and it made the front page of the newspaper. How our morals and expectations have changed. As for the racial comments, I have to say, there is some validity to the charge of poor parenting and anti-white attitudes among black parents, but white parents are equally guilty of poor parenting. The schools don't teach, the parents don't parent, and society forgives criminals. Then we have Hollywood entertainers, hypocrites who cater to Americans' basest cravings to watch extreme violence and sexual acts, and we have programmed generations of kids to act like pseudo-gangsters.

18) Comment by squiggly - 06/01/2013

I personally know of a handful of kids, whose parents I know, that were at the mall last night when this happened. Only 1 of them was black. Since when, have teens not been allowed to go somewhere unsupervised. At some point parents have to give their kids a little freedom to learn responsibility and independence. When parents are too overprotective, they are breeding rebellion, lack of self confidence, and dependence. I know that when I was in college, the wildest kids were those who were overprotected by their parents. Of course, not setting rules and not disciplining at all is just as bad. You have to find a middle ground. So just because, apparently, hundreds of parents dropped their kids off at the mall yesterday, does not make them bad parents. Unfortunately, being at the wrong place at the wrong time, is a part of life.

As a teacher (who is white) who has worked with lots of kids in black neighborhoods, this event saddens me because I know that the VAST majority of black kids are good kids...but I'm sure that this event will only harden the opinions of my fellow white people who buy into the stereotypes.

22) Comment by MBW - 06/01/2013

Let's have some perspective, people. This was a fight between a couple of kids that was exacerbated by the fact that everybody is paranoid about mass shootings. No weapons were pulled. This just seems worse than it was because everybody freaked out.

24) Comment by NearBarbarian - 06/01/2013

Chucky--Thanks for your point of clarification. I was speaking at that point about American society as a whole. Race, racism, racial misunderstandings, and the like are undeniably deeply embedded in our history, discourse, and politics. That being said, I've not personally experienced "racial problems" at the MOL. Have I encountered or observed some individual jerks (of all hues) every once in awhile? I suppose some of them might have been racists or racially insensitive or racially hyper-sensitive, but I'm not sure (I can't read minds). I also don't think it's wise to chock up the stupid acts of teens to some sort of racial conspiracy or make them grounds for writing off a whole generation and their parents. In fact, 99% of the racism that I, as a white guy having spent his whole life in the South, have observed and experienced has issued from whites. But do I think the majority of whites are deliberate racists? Most certainly not. Just as I know that the majority of black teens are not thugs. I'm not wearing rose-tinted glasses, but I refuse to wear jade-tinted ones.

25) Comment by Chucky - 06/01/2013

You look good in those rose-colored glasses. "This situation knows no racial or socio-economic barriers" What situation is that ? Why is it when a pattern develops that is dis-favorable to the minority the first words in defense is, "there but for the grace of God goes you" ? 70805 has a racial problem the MOL has a racial problem I know of business that closed due to racial problems. I do like your post's and the insight's you have.

26) Comment by NearBarbarian - 06/01/2013

Oh, good grief, high and mighty pontificators! First, what happened was inexcusable; I doubt anyone would say otherwise. However, to act like malls have not been hang outs for unsupervised teenagers for at least three decades is to be willfully ignorant. Second, what occurred last night is not the norm, regardless of how some race-baiting and youth- bashing alarmists want to paint things. What is the norm is this: a gathering of hormone- pumped teenagers has the potential of getting out of hand. Those of you who were never teenagers--who wandered around at high school sporting events, cruised around after the dance, took part in some form of vandalism, got into an argument/fight with people in an opposing clique, witnessed or engaged in acts of jealousy, etc, etc, etc--are in an ultra- fringe minority. The rest of you are forgetting that you, too, were at least occasionally irresponsible, unstable, thuggish, stupid, immature, and wayward juveniles. Third, teenagers today have exponentially more disposable income than those of previous generations. Malls, which have been waining in popularity since their heyday in the 80s, would probably close up if it were not for teen traffic and teen employees. Fourth, the behavior of teens does reflect--admittedly in an exaggerated form--larger societal and cultural norms (always has, always will). The whole early 21st-century American ethos is based on spectacle, narcissism, tribalism, hyper-individualism, self-righteousness, moral relativism, irresponsibility, and a generally crude form of libertarianism. There is a continuum here, bringing together what occurred last night, what occurred on Wall Street five years ago, and any reality show you might name. This situation knows no racial or socio-economic barriers. Fifth, why this got under everyone's skin, including mine, is most likely because the mass murder in Connecticut and the heightened volatility/combativeness of our nation's political environment are playing Dickens's Christmas specters to our collective Ebenezer Scrooge. So, it's one thing to be upset by a bunch of teens acting like teens sometimes do, regrettably; it's another to project all our personal resentments, prejudices, and self-loathing on them. It seems reasonable to expect for kids to learn a lesson in responsibility--facilitated by fair, mature adults. (I would have liked the police to have held at the scene all the kids even indirectly involved, requiring the parents to come in, to go through a debriefing, and to be generally inconvenienced.) It's more reprehensible and immature than the teens' actions to use this case as an opportunity to call for an overt or covert race war, to be self-righteous and self-deceptive, to argue for a police state. In other words, we as a whole society are culpable, too, and we shouldn't be let off the hook. Let the howling recommence.

Young black youths swarm malls and fights break out. Young white youths shoot up schools.

28) Comment by redavaw1 - 06/01/2013

Thirty years ago we went to the mall as teenagers too. We went to meet other teenagers. Kids these days go to have fights and show that they deserve "respect" from other people. The problem with that is that they haven't learned from their parents what respect really is. They think they deserve respect from the human race because they can carry a gun or because they beat up someone. They have no idea how to EARN respect. What a pity. Personally, their parents should be able to see if their child was really a part of the problem and try to correct their behavior. When they get out into the corporate world and want a good job, they will have no idea how to earn promotions and trust from an employer. They will eventually be a trouble maker and fall into the same poor neighborhoods where drugs and unemployment live. It's the same vicious cycle and white people will be the blame of course.

29) Comment by twinkie1cat - 06/01/2013

The race of the kids does not matter. Parents have no business dropping off their kids at malls at night for free babysitting services. It is the parents who should be taken to court and made to do community service along side their riotous children. Children under the age of 16 should not be allowed out alone after dark anywhere except church, on a job or at a school function or in sight of their home. And, by the way, if these kids were attending Sunday School and church ( temple, mosque, etc.) regularly WITH their parents, this kind of thing would not be happening. If they are young enough to have to be dropped off then they should not be dropped off.

30) Comment by redavaw1 - 06/01/2013

oh....and you can tell the Mall of Louisiana that they just lost my business. And I'm sure there are many others who will not be there either.

31) Comment by redavaw1 - 06/01/2013

Thank goodness my children are 19 & 20, in college away from this town. Not that I would ever let them go to a "meet and greet" alone at the mall. You parents that allowed your kids to participate in this should be ashamed of yourself! You knew something wasnt right, but you let them go anyway. We are sick of the black community running off everyone because you like to cause riots. We just want a nice community where everyone gets along and respects each other. i don't respect a parent who would allow their child to go to the mall and participate in something like this. You are second class citizens and it has nothing to do with your race, it's your morals. You go to church on sunday and pretend that you have morals. But you don't. GET A GRIP! Go to parenting class so your kids don't turn out to be thieve and murderers!!

Soldier - As much as I agree with your comment (I'm 58), if you use a belt or switch today, YOU will be arrested so maybe one of the real solutions is to go back to the day when parents were actually allowed to discipline their children. Instead, the Liberal school system teaches them how easy it is to get their parents in trouble. Those kids in the photo probably weren't involved in the fight so you can't truly "decide" their involvement. And if these kids are 17 or older, they can legally leave home if they want and parents can do nothing about it plus those that are 16 and 17 should actually be mature enough to go to a mall and not cause this type of mayhem. These kids in the photograph---they don't look like hoods to me, and I bet their parents don't want them up in this mess, so the parents better deal with this. The MOL better deal with it, too, because these kids don't have money to spend, and they run off those who do.

Are we sure that a sale on Nike basketball shoes wasn't the cause?

This is EXACTLY why I'm property shopping out of the parish. Way out of the parish. These parents complaining about not being about to pick their kids up really made me boil! Why did they drop them off there in the first place? How many of them had a shopping bag. Doubt any money was spent at all. This type of nonsense is why I no longer go to the mall after dark OR any movie theatre in town if I'm going to be there after dark. We do not life in a safe city. Just because no one was hurt this time doesn't mean it won't happen in the future. In fact I'm surprised it hasn't happened already. Sad, very sad. A direct cause of parents not properly rearing their children. I have many friends teaching in the public school system. They totally agree. Many, many parents just don't care about their kids beyond a certain age. Most of them are still children themselves.

there have been a number of incidents at MOL that have not be made public for fear the area may seem un-safe , can't hide this ....

ebbette: Please explain what you mean by "the Liberal school system teaches them how easy it is to get their parents in trouble." I'm a counselor in a school, and from what I've seen from my students, the parents of the problem students either don't discipline at all or they beat their kids to the extent of abuse. I make a report of child abuse because I'm legally obligated to do so and then leave the investigation up to those who are charged with that duty. A DCFS case worker told me once that for them to take an abuse charge seriously, the child must be "d--- near dead." Our teachers and staff greatly appreciate when parents are involved and discipline their children. We have a growing number of parents who teach their children that their parents are the only people who can tell them what to do. I agree with those who posted that the parents who dropped these children off at the mall should be held responsible for their actions.

These kids were obviously under driving age. How did they get to the mall? Why would you drop your child anywhere that there was no supervision? Real "concerned" parents when they had to go to the mall and "find" their child.

These kids were obviously under driving age. So how did they get to the mall? And why would you drop your child at the mall at night with no supervision? Real "concerned" parents when they had to come "find' them.

Five days after Kip gets sworn in for his 3rd term after running a campaign on "what crime? there is no crime in BR!" now this. Maybe Dale Brown can go kiss all these troubled yuts on the head and make them behave.

Since we have had several similar instances like this at the MOL, it is time to start banning these kids from the mall. The vast majority of them have no money to spend on anything anyway, and could be arrested for vagrancy. Next time, the cops need to start rounding them up BEFORE they cause trouble.

There's a positive story on giving school supplies to kids in today's paper. 90% of the people at the Mall fight are kids out on a Saturday night. It's the 10% Thug population who ruin everything. I'm just glad they have the Malls to go to so they'll stay away from Perkins Rowe and Towne Centre for the most part. I doubt we'll ever hear about a mob in a book store or health food store. For this reason I wholeheartedly support leaving all your kids at Malls. It's good to know where to avoid going. Thank you for that.

OMG...What is wrong with Youth today? I don't recall any of this sorta stuff happening when I was growing up. But the difference is when I was growing up our parents discipline us. They didn't try to be our best friend. If we got into trouble they would tear that hide up no we didn't get put in time out. Weather it be with the belt or the switch from the nearby tree that we had to go and get. The parents of today want to be their child's friend instead of their parent. And we wonder what's wrong with Americas young people today. Maybe it's time for law enforcement to start holding the parents responsible for their children's actions. Also maybe the MOL businesses should bring the parents of these juvenile delinquents and sue them to recoup the money loss due to the MOL businesses having to close early due to their undisciplined child's action. Today's Parents need to stop trying to be their childs BFF and start being a parent.

Not going to say anything racist like most of the people who post....but a solution to this is not to allow those under 17 years old in the mall without a parent. If you do the research a lot of malls have implemented this because parents use the malls as a babysitting service. So lets get MOL to do that instead of posting hateful rants with no solutions

As politically correct as the Advocate is, I'm sure they will remove my comment. However, everyone knows the problem here, this was caused by about 200 black teenage thugs that continue to hang out at the MOL. They do no business, they just hang around and run off other shoppers. I, and many others avoid both malls due to this and we spend our money elsewhere. Why were the parents of these delinquents? Were any arrest made? Stop shopping at the MOL until something is done to stop this kind of behavior, it's just not safe.
