Charity sets fundraiser for March

A Door of Hope will hold a “Hope” charity social, chef’s showcase and silent auction from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. March 2 at Greystone Country Club, 9214 Greystone Drive, Denham Springs. Tickets may be purchased starting Jan. 2 for $45.

The mission of Door of Hope is to establish a residential program for women from 17 to 35 years old who have been victims of physical and sexual abuse, as well as those facing life-controlling issues such as eating disorders, addiction, depression and self-harm.

Christmas tree recycling

The Livingston Parish Master Gardeners and the City of Walker are sponsoring a collection site in Walker for the recycling of Christmas trees. Christmas trees will be accepted from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Jan. 10 at Sidney Hutchinson Park in Walker.

Trees cannot have tinsel, flocking, bases, plastic bags, lights or ornaments; also, no artificial trees, master gardener members said.

The service is free, and all residents are encouraged to recycle their trees which will be turned into mulch by Walker city workers and used for city landscaping projects.

Sidney Hutchinson Park is located off La. 447 (Walker North Road), one half mile north of Florida Boulevard; across the railroad tracks on Ballpark Road. The park can also be reached from La. 1029 (Corbin Avenue).

ACT prep course

Southeastern Louisiana University’s Division of Extended Studies is offering an ACT Preparation Course at the Literacy and Technology Center, 9261 Florida Blvd., Walker.

Three sessions will be taught on Thursdays from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Cost is $250 with all materials covered.

Dates of the sessions include: Session 1 — Jan. 10-Feb. 7; Session 2 — March 7–April 11; and Session 3 — May 9–June 6.

Volunteer for wildlife

The Wings of Hope Wildlife Sanctuary, 20591 Abe Hoover Road, Livingston, is seeking volunteers for “Volunteer Work Days,” held on the second Saturday of each month. The next volunteer work day will be Jan. 12.

The wildlife sanctuary staff relies on volunteers to assist in the care of the animals and maintenance of the facilities.

Parent outreach

Learn more about services, programs and other events offered through the Livingston Parish Special Education Department at the Literacy and Technology Center, 9261 Florida Blvd., Walker, on Jan. 17 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

This is a free outreach for families who have children ages 3-21 who receive special education services and/or are in the Gifted and Talented program in Livingston Parish Public Schools.
