Greenwell Springs Road is now open. A two-alarm fire at Baton Rouge Bus Maintenance, 7106 Greenwell Springs Road early Friday morning closed Greenwell Springs Road from Victoria Drive to Lobdell Avenue, according to a press release from the Baton Rouge Fire Department.
People are asked to avoid the area until the clean up is complete and the road is reopened. Firefighters were called out to the fire at about 1:15 a.m. but the building was already engulfed in flames. The roof of the building collapsed shortly after firefighters arrived, according to the press release.
The structure was a total loss, however firefighters were able to keep the fire from spread to a nearby second building owned by the same company. Baton Rouge Fire Department Hazardous Materials units also responded when motor oil was found to be flowing from the doused building into the streets, according to the press release.
ExxonMobil also brought additional containment equipment to the fire to help HazMat Officer in containing the spill. The state Department of Environmental Quality responded to the scene and the owner of the company hired the private contractor OMI Environmental Solutions to begin clean up.
It’s estimated that the fire resulted in a $300,000 loss for the building and the contents. The cause of the fire is under investigation. No one was injured.
