Kleckley: Waive fine on teachers in recall

House Speaker Chuck Kleckley asked the state Ethics Board Wednesday to consider waiving $1,000 fines against school teachers who tried to oust him and Gov. Bobby Jindal from office.

“Many times deadlines and other campaign ethics requirements can be unclear to individuals not familiar with the political process. We are fortunate here in America to be able to voice our disagreements, and I strongly believe in protecting those rights,” Kleckley, R-Lake Charles, said in a prepared statement.

The Louisiana Board of Ethics is scheduled to review Friday whether Calcasieu Parish public school teachers Angie Bonvillian and Brenda Romero should each pay a $1,000 fine for missing the deadline on filing a report connected to their recall drives.

The teachers asked the Ethics Board to waive or reduce the fines.

Bonvillian told the board that she and other recall organizers “did not know what they were getting into.” Romero claimed she misunderstood the filing requirements.

Louisiana Republican Party executive director Jason Doré complained to the board about the teachers failing to submit documents to the state on time.

Successful legislation involving private school vouchers and teacher tenure sparked the recall efforts.

Bonvillian chaired the Jindal effort. Romero chaired the effort against Kleckley.

Neither effort generated the needed support for recall elections.

One would think that people who call themselves "teachers" would have the intelligence to research the rules and laws before undertaking a project that could end up costing them a thousand bucks....so much for the quality of the teachers that supported this train wreck...now it is time for them to take their medicine and they are whining like a child..go figure.

Hey, chuck. Do you think asking for this waiver will get you teacher union members votes next election? I think not. You have the "R" on your name. Let them pay the fine and move on.

Gosh, bloghore Sadow, I'm really surprised you would support the fine. It sets a bad example for the chirren to see Democracy in action, to believe a small voice can still be heard, to watch someone dare to rise against a machine. Way better that the children see the smack-down because then they will learn to stay in their seats and shut up, right?

Great move, Chuck.

Exactly. It sets a bad example to waive it for children, but it also isn't a surprising request, as that same attitude of unaccountability has infested public education in LA for so long; see http://jeffsadow.blogspot.com/2012/11/fine-recall-scofflaws-to-present.html.

I hope they don't waive this. The teachers should have done their homework.
