PONCHATOULA — A Ponchatoula woman died early Saturday when her mobile home caught fire and burned, according to a State Police news release.
State Trooper First Class Nick Manale said Ponchatoula firefighters called at 3 a.m. to a trailer fire at 21502 Katina Road put out the blaze and then discovered the body of Annette Athmann, 59, in a bedroom.
Another resident, Earl Grillot, 57, escaped unharmed, Manale said.
State Fire Marshal’s Office, Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office and Ponchatoula Fire Department investigations determined the fire originated in Athmann’s bedroom and it apparently started from unsafe smoking practices, Manale said.
The investigation turned up no evidence of arson or other criminal activity.
