Holden denounces ad

Mayor-President Kip Holden and other speakers Wednesday accused Holden’s best-financed challenger in the mayor’s race, Metro Councilman Mike Walker, of playing the race card in a television ad that links Holden to Nation of Islam minister Louis Farrakhan.

Holden and others held a news conference downtown Wednesday afternoon to denounce the ad.

The ad shows video of the 79-year-old Farrakhan — who spoke at Southern University on Oct. 3 — thanking the mayor and the police chief for escort and security services he received during his visit. City police and State Police personnel were involved in providing security at the event and during Farrakhan’s trips to and from the airport in New Orleans.

The ad alleges public funds and police personnel used to protect and ferry Farrakhan could be better spent on adding police officers. As a limousine is shown pulling away from City Hall, a voice over says “Mayor, our police and taxes are for fighting crime, not for limoing Louie.”

John Noland, the chairman of the East Baton Rouge Parish Redevelopment Authority’s board of commissioners, said the ad would set race relations back in the parish.

“I am involved in two things now, Together Baton Rouge and the East Baton Rouge Redevelopment Authority, that exist primarily to promote racial harmony,” he said. “This job is hard enough without negative, contrived ads adding to the division.”

Businesswoman Pat Felder said ads like Walker’s were “meant to tear the community apart.”

Contacted afterward, Walker denied the ad was about race.

“The point is that utilizing Baton Rouge Police to escort private citizens is bad policy,” he said. “It’s a misuse of taxpayer dollars.”

Holden denounced the ad’s implication that he ordered security for Farrakhan or that he had met with the Nation of Islam leader.

“We cannot allow this to go unanswered,” Holden said. “My whereabouts, on Oct. 3, are well documented.”

The night Farrakhan spoke at Southern, Holden attended a political forum for mayoral candidates at St. Aloysius Church.

The security for Farrakhan’s visit was arranged by the Louisiana State Police and the Baton Rouge City Police Department, Holden said.

“I do not micromanage the Police Department,” Holden said. “The entire spot is fabricated.”

Those comments were backed up by Police Chief Dewayne White, who said he had assigned one officer to escort Farrakhan from New Orleans to Baton Rouge and back after his speech. “Three or four” other officers were deployed for security while Farrakhan delivered his speech, White said.

“There are people who would consider Farrakhan a high-value target,” White said.

The protection offered Farrakhan was similar to arrangements made to protect presidential candidates Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich, and former President Bill Clinton, White said.

White said he had an officer present to ensure the “fluid movement” of Farrakhan to and from Baton Rouge.

Walker characterized the protective detail as an “abuse of police manpower.”

Those officers “should be on the streets of Baton Rouge in this time of a crime emergency,” he said.

If elected, Walker said, he would do away with the policy of having Baton Rouge Police officers escort private citizens.

The mayor should speak with Farrakhan if he had a problem with the ad, Walker said.

@countryboy...I KNOW he was killed by members of his own group, my understanding is it wasn't his own body guards, though, my understanding is X went to Mecca and saw all manner of races of Muslims there and had a change of heart...his parent organization took offense to that...my point was, Malcolm X was as controversial as Farrakhan is today. It wouldn't matter to the international Muslim terrorist community who killed Farrakhan, it would only matter it happened on American soil.

Walker as mayor of Central. It would work. They are pretty backwards and almost all white except for a young black man I know who works for the city of Baton Rouge. I picked up two of their local papers, apparently rivals. One was plainly conservative but not obscenely disgusting. The other had 4 pages of articles and colored pictures of the hate group, Louisiana Family Forum praising the conservative state legislators who followed Jindal's agenda for destroying the schools and medical care. Gene Mills, the president of the hate group appeared in about 1/3 of them. So Walker and Mills would probably be just fine for the City of Central.

3) Comment by twinkie1cat - 26/10/2012

Teacherguy you are right about Mike Walker losing votes for this. Anyway the last thing BR needs is a Republican in the mayor's office so he can go right on sticking his foot in his mouth. I hope he does it several more times before the election. He is arrogant and conservative, a typical Republican. And yes, the assassination of a prominent Muslim would cause major political and probably security problems that a city as small as Baton Rouge could not cope with. But there is one error in your message. Nation of Islam is more of a political black separatist group than a religion. It is about political and economic empowerment for African-Americans. I once read a paper that compared Nation of Islam with traditional Islam. They have very little in common.

4) Comment by twinkie1cat - 26/10/2012

Yes, Farrakahn is a racist. Very much so. And he has a right to be stuck on stupid just like every other black and white racist in America. If we could get all the racists out of political office this would be a much better country and virtually free of Republicans as well as the many racist African-Americans. But this is America and if you can take away his freedom you would take mine too and I would be in deep trouble without it because I am always going to stand for freedom and equality.

5) Comment by twinkie1cat - 26/10/2012

Farrakahn is a well known political figure. Of course the police would provide an escort. Can you see the stink that would be caused by his being killed in an accident or assassinated on the road between New Orleans and Baton Rouge? When he came to Atlanta he usually had his meetings at First Iconium Baptist on Moreland Ave. Not only did his bodyguards stand on the steps but he had a police escort in a city in which he had many supporters. (I know this because I lived across the street from First Iconium.) I am sure there are many conservatives here who think that Farrakahn should be killed. Unfortunately for them, this is still America and we have freedom of speech. Mike Walker is nothing but another boring, backwards two-bit Republican politician. We don't need him making Louisiana even more filthy and backwards. He took an opportunity to make a ridiculous complaint for an extra bit of publicity. He needs to sit down, retire from public office and do whatever it is that Republicans do when they can't mess things up any more. Kip is not a perfect mayor, but he is better than any Republican.

I never trivialized the murder of the two deputies. YOU seem to think they have something to do with this election, which they don't. By trying to connect the tragic events of Jan 10, 1972 with this mayoral election, it is YOU who has trivialized their deaths. We get it. Mike Walker is white and he’s got your vote because of it. As far as my race is concerned, it’s sad that you think that only minorities speak up against racists such as yourself. The world is growing up. It will leave “your kind” behind. Future generations, even those raised by racists, will eventually shed that mindset.

9) Comment by CountryBoysCanSurvive - 26/10/2012

Italy has a large black population. But your remarks tend to go in one direction, don't ya think? If they removed racist out of the language you could not express a point. It seems the events on North Blvd is beyond your grasp. You have to be on one side or another. By the way the next time you get arrested by the Sheriff's Office share your thoughts with them, on your trivial acceptance of Wilder and Hancock being killed by Black Muslims, on your way to jail.

10) Comment by Tea_Slayer - 26/10/2012

If you are looking for evidence that this ad was purely race-baiting, just read CBCS' screed. I am well aware of the incident in 1972 where the two deputies were murdered in the line of duty. I still see no connection to this election except that the mayor is black. He hasn’t aligned himself with Farrakhan (except for being the same skin color). Again, thanks CBCS for proving that this ad had a clear message and the Zachary/Central racist like CBCS got it loud and clear. As for my homeland…well that would be this land, Italy, and Ireland…Nice try, but your assumptions are wrong again…

11) Comment by CountryBoysCanSurvive - 26/10/2012

2 teacherguy Malcom X was shot by body guards, read your history not rely on TV. 2Tea_Slayer and Dmj have you ever considered moving back to the "home land"? 2Tea_Slayer What have these 2 Deputies got to do with the election? They were killed in cold blood by the same people your Mayor aligns himself with. What was their crime? Trying to save the life of a WHITE Television reporter who's only crime, was that he was white and in the wrong place. Your Black Muslim heroes castrated Bob Johnson with a pocket knife after beating him into a coma. Now why should taxpayer monies be spent on him? Why didn't he fly into Baton Rouge Metro Airport? Surely you can't put this clown into the same group of Presidents and former presidents?

12) Comment by teacherguy - 26/10/2012

I might add, Holden and the Metro Council's shenanigans have motivated me to look to "new blood" for mayor...

13) Comment by teacherguy - 26/10/2012

Anybody remember how Malcolm X died? If there is no security and no police escort...BR becomes international news IF someone tries to pop a cap in him (God help us if a renowned Muslim gets assassinated on American soil, you see how the Middle East reacts over a cartoon)...the stupidity of this ad has caused Mike Walker to lose at least one vote...well, four...my wife, dad, stepson, and I generally discuss elections and tend to vote together.

14) Comment by nimby? - 25/10/2012

LSUinVail, and I think I would enjoy a political discussion with you down at any watering hole

16) Comment by LSUinVail - 25/10/2012

I digress Tea_Slayer...may have been speaking in generalities here. I do love Louisiana just bums me out to see religion still so entrenched in government down there. Ya know, as a registered independent voter (voted for Obama in 08) I feel barraged sometimes from people on the extreme left as well as those on the extreme right. I think the majority of us in the USA are more similar than different quite frankly. Forums like this, where you have anonymity, are conducive to bringing out the worst in us just to make a point; myself included. Occasionally I find myself in political discussions at my local watering hole with friends, something about being able to look each other in the eyes brings about a sense of respectful commonality.

17) Comment by Hello Baton Rouge - 25/10/2012

So just to clarify for everyone who thinks this is race-baiting, because Mike Walker is white and Farrakhan is black, this is automatically race baiting. I gotta give it to you all, that's a valiant effort to try and mask the facts. The flaw in your logic, however, is that the man who accused the mayor of picking him up a the airport is Louis Farrakhan not Mike Walker. That being said, I agree with you all 100% that the man accusing Holden of fraternizing with Farrakhan is absolutely positively a racist. Watch the video for yourselves and let me know at which point Mike Walker intervenes.

18) Comment by Tea_Slayer - 25/10/2012

LSUinVail, I enjoy my life in Louisiana, but people like CBCS who want to keep us in the dark ages make my blood boil. My comment hardly qualifies as revealing myself to be “intellectually bankrupt”. I sometimes think that CBCS is just a parody, like Being_Stupid. I can hope, at least...

19) Comment by LSUinVail - 25/10/2012

This is quite humorous, seriously. School yard kids hurling feeble insults and calling people names when they realize they've revealed themselves as intellectually bankrupt. Hello Baton Rouge: Keep up. The mayor was nowhere near Farrakhan. It is well documented that he was at a fundraiser at the time. IP: Weak sauce… If you can’t recognize this ad as race baiting then my opinion of your cognitive skills (which is actually pretty high) just diminished. There are cases where false charges of racism are leveled at politicians, but Walker was clearly making this a racial issue (without actually having to say it). Unfortunately, his campaign staff isn’t skilled enough for this ad to pass the smell test.

27) Comment by Chucky - 25/10/2012

28) Comment by ex-louisianian - 25/10/2012

"Obviously, the ad's intent was to stoke racial fears and religious prejudices. Otherwise, what's the point?" That's the sole point, to link in the minds of undecided white voters a deeply conservative black mayor to a racial bogeyman, no matter how tenuous the connection. This instance of Southern racist dog whistle politics, though, is glaringly obvious.

29) Comment by Chucky - 25/10/2012

Southerners crack me up...listen to yourselves. When someone doesn't have the same views as yourself, the first thing to come to mind is calling someone a racist...pretty weak. Come on man this is the 21st century.

31) Comment by Hello Baton Rouge - 25/10/2012

DJM, you've just set the bar even higher for missing the point. What business do City of Baton Rouge employees have spending my money to escort a guy from 75 miles away to here? If they really did it because he 'needs protection' they'd have been waiting for him and his racist possee at the Highland Rd exit as opposed to 'shepherding' him and his buddy Kip Holden all the way from Jefferson Parish. Furthermore, why didnt Mister 'i hate whitey' Farrakhan fly into the Baton Rouge airport, 2 miles literally from where he spoke to his massive audience of about 45 people? Why do taxpaying companies in Baton Rouge have to pay for police escorts when a racist con man from out of state gets the same service for free? Walkers ad pointed out that Farrakhan thanked Kip for escorting him but it was no ones words except Farrakhan himself.

32) Comment by phil - 25/10/2012

OK so this might be somewhat important, but this is also a diversion from a lot of big issues that are NOT being discussed. How about let's concentrate on more important local issues like downtown spending, the sewer project, TIF areas, crime prevention and crime prevention districts, those crime camera contracts etc, CATS, public schools vs charter and private, increased number of special districts and associated taxes and fees, Sugarcane Community Development district, bond swaps and derivatives, possible expansion of the DDD area and taxes.etc etc. Instead I guess this is all I will hear about until the election. Maybe we all are being played??

33) Comment by DMJ - 25/10/2012

Host, you've just set the bar incredibly high for missing the point. Farrakhan got a police escort not because he's a beloved and revered figure, but because he's a controversial figure (see comments below proving my point.) and needs a police escort. Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich and Bill Clinton, all private citizens, all got police escorts, yet Walker didn't seem to take issue with those instances. He specifically chose Farrakhan to put in his ad. Hmm.... Look, I think Farrakhan is a fool as well, but it doesn't mean Walker's ad wasn't racist. It most definitely was. Obviously, the ad's intent was to stoke racial fears and religious prejudices. Otherwise, what's the point?

34) Comment by The_Host - 25/10/2012

So is it everyones contention that is calling Walker the racist that LOUIS FARRAKHAN is somehow not a racist and bigot and anti-semite? That he is a man to be admired and adored and looked up to for inspiration. Is this man trying to pull the races together or split them apart in your minds? If you think he is building bridges between whites and blacks you are delusional. This is just another case of the whites being called on to denounce another white the minorities take issue with. Then when their race trots out their racist "leaders" everyone is to pay respect and tax money for their protection? Honestly on what planet do you think one race can be this way while another is not and everyone is considered equal? It no more works that way than the other way around. If any group is given special privilage due to skin color every other skin color is going to take exception to that. Either we all agree to be equals or we just keep creating new people that see race first since it is what gets them what they want before working hard to just be a better person overall does.

35) Comment by NewsReader - 25/10/2012

Mr Holden needs to comprehend that as mayor, the buck stops with him. He shouldn't HAVE to micro-manage but he IS responsible for the job performance and expenditure of those he appoints. Mr Holden is simply coming off as yet another politician who doesn't want to admit to mistakes made within the departments under him. Pretty similar to a current holder of an office in DC and his statements regarding an embassy attack...

History, never forget and you will be a slave for ever, For all my Black immigrant friends i know this seems stupid but we still have a few that do not get it.

38) Comment by Duckyluve - 25/10/2012

(possibly considered racist and militant)? Really? Mike Walker pointed out the fact that Holden and the Police chief sent BRPD officers to escort a known racist and militant from New Orleans to BR and back, on the taxpayers dime. If the militant speaker fears for his life then maybe he should stop being a racist militant!!!!! Holden has failed this parish in so many ways its not even funny any more. Its time for a change in the mayors office. It is funny how liberals and blacks are always the first ones to bring race into every conversation which to me makes them the bigger racist people.

39) Comment by Warp7 - 25/10/2012

Some on here are living in denial or they are unwilling to admit the truth or more likely like what Walker did. Walker is not fooling anyone, he used a racist tactic to try to influence whites who are not currently supporting him. He took a footage of man who is black and is very controversial (possibly considered racist and militant) and tried to link him to the Mayor, who just happens to be black, to convince/scare whites not to vote for a black mayor. This was pure and simple racist. Walker has shown that he cannot work in a city as diverse as Baton Rouge. Makes you wonder if he possibly has a white sheet with a hood hidden in the trunk of his car. And Being_Stupid, once again you have shown your ignorance.

40) Comment by bourbon-soda - 25/10/2012

Boys and Girls you are being used to foster more race hate not by politicians but from students operating out of Southern University.

43) Comment by LetsGeaux2 - 25/10/2012

So is it safe to safe that non of those saying he should have a police escort would care if Newt Gingrich or Mitt Romney, before getting the official nomination, had one as well. It may be true that the city should not pay for escorts by the police, but this ad clearly goes to suggest something way more ominous...than what it alleges...BR has bigger fish to fry than to worry about issues like this....smh

44) Comment by DMJ - 25/10/2012

Hence, why he needed a police escort in the first place.

45) Comment by Being_Stupid - 25/10/2012

The world would be a better place without Louis Farrakhan. It is counter-productive to society to provide a police escort for Louis Farrakhan. If somebody were to kill him, it would be a good thing.

46) Comment by Being_Stupid - 25/10/2012

Mayor Holden is the one playing the race card. As mayor, he should have publicly denounced the visit by Farrakhan. If John Noland on the RDA wants to improve race relations, he could start by telling Louis Farrakhan he is not welcomed in Baton Rouge.

Farrakhan is a notorious race-baiter. That is what makes him a "high value target". Why am I racist for pointing that out? Am I not supposed to notice black against white racism? I am appalled that Kip Holden and Southern University would involve themselves with this divisive, intolerant man. Bringing him in, treating Farrakhan as an honored guest-this is the kind of behavior that sets race relations in Baton Rouge back for decades.

If the mayor was truly innocent of meeting with Farrakhan, he'd have taken legal action against the 'minister' by now and let Baton Rouge know about it. Instead, what does he do, goes after everyone else who plays the video clip. Lets see it, Holden. Send a certified letter to Farrakhan demanding him to go on video and state that he fabricated those facts, otherwise, stop trying to blame Walker and all the websites that are running the video. Although we know you wont because he's your pal. Its easier to try and play it off as mud slinging by Walker, which, because of the video, is not working.

For the record, "reknown" is not an English word, nor is "reknowned." The word you are looking for is spelled "renown." It is a noun that means fame or celebrity, as in, "Farrakhan has achieved a great deal of renown for his segregationist views."

How is playing a video clip of a black islam supporter thanking the black mayor for 'shepherding him' from NOLA to BR playing the race card. Remember boys and girls, if you think something is racist that only means you see things as either black or white, not equal. Thanks for clearing up that you're a racist, Kip. Hopefully Farrakhan will give you a job on his staff when you don't get re elected.

See name. I saw this video two weeks ago, old news. Kip was race baiting in Scotlandville when he took a shot at Walker for supporting the SEBR school district. Politicians are all the same. Together Baton Rouge and The redevelopment authority are a scam. I'm voting for kip simply because as a candidate Mike Walker didn't make the commitment to get fit and look presentable. Seriously, it's not rocket science.

66) Comment by lys - 24/10/2012

It seems that this ad is intended to get Mike Walker's base fired up. Think about it, this will not change the minds of people who have decided to vote for the mayor, so why run an ad like this? It's divisive to say the least. It makes Mike Walker seem desparate, and I don't think I am inclined to vote for a desparate person.

67) Comment by 8.3 - 24/10/2012

No matter where one stands on this issue, I do appreciate the astute, well written comments, often a rarity on these boards. Much more common are the posted banalities of third tier intellects which apparently befits the denizens of Louisiana (albeit painful to witness) , intellect maybe being too strong a word. That being said, maybe advertising KKK meetings in Walker (get it , huh huh huh?) could exact recompense. My apologies to this stellar group for pointing out that this is satire, but irony, if not sheer incompetence, tends to replicate itself mindlessly like bacteria.

68) Comment by Duckyluve - 24/10/2012

69) Comment by joey.esposito - 24/10/2012

The mayor would not be crying racism if the ad targeted the public paying for the transportation of David Harris, president of the National Jewish Democratic Council. This ad brings to light the fiscal decision of the police chief appointed by the mayor. All public money is our money. I would no more write a check to pay for the transportation of the leader of the Nation of Islam as I would to pay for the transportation of the leader of the United Methodist Church, the Catholic Church, etal. The "race" we should be concerned about is the color of the ink the U.S. Mint uses.

70) Comment by Citizen Jane - 24/10/2012

An internationally reknown leader of a solely African American organization speaking at an HBCU? Not sure how you could exrapolate race baiting from that (using logic and not a knee jerk-they-started-it reaction). You may not agree with his message, but most people in BR didn't know he was here until Walker turned into something ugly.

How can Walker even make this into an issue? It's a routine matter of policing in any force to provide protection to high-profile visitors.

Bringing Farrakhan to town is not race baiting pure and simple?

I do have a problem with Mike Walker using this tactic to demonstrate inappropriate use of City resources, and I see no reason to blame the Mayor on this. He does not micro-manage and shouldn't. I do solidly blame Chief White for this inexcusable use of City resources instead. But I really do have another extremely serious problem with Police Chief White's statement: "The protection offered Farrakhan was similar to arrangements made to protect presidential candidates Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney and former president Bill Clinton". If Police Chief White believes that Louis Farrakhan deserves the same treatment, respect and service that former President Clinton, or any of the presidential candidates, Mayor Holden seriously needs to re-think his choice for Police Chief. If Chief White places the importance of Louis Farrakhan in the same status level as former President Clinton, then he by far is more race divisive to this parish than anything Mike Walker or his people could ever do. Mayor Holden, I believe it your responsibility to, if you truly wish to bring the people of EBR Parish together, severely reprimand Chief White for this thoughtless and inappropriate statement comparing former President Clinton to Louis Farrakhan. Louis Farrakhan made his name and fame by trying to create race wars in America. If he is a "high-value target" as Chief White states, then let him be responsible for his own security as he is everywhere he goes.

I was so disappointed in Walker when I saw that ad. It was race baiting pure and simple. Baton Rouge has come so far, and still has a long way to go in bridging the racial divide. If Mike Walker wants to be mayor he should be a leader and act in the best interest of our community. This is not the way to go.
