One person was killed after an 18-wheeler crashed at the foot of the Atchafalya Basin Bridge at Henderson on Thursday night, prompting the closure of Interstate 10 westbound, State Police said.
I-10 West will remain closed at LA-415 through this afternoon and possibly into the evening, according to State Trooper First Class Stephen Hammons. Congestion is approaching the top of the Mississippi River Bridge, accor.
An 18-wheeler traveling east crossed the median and struck another 18-wheeler traveling west, said Hammons.
One of the 18-wheelers was carrying drilling mud that caught fire as a result of the crash, added Hammons. The state Department of Environmental Quality is overseeing the cleanup of the spill.
The victim’s identity was not available late Thursday.
According to DOTD’s Twitter pages, the agency is urging motorists who are traveling to Lafayette to use I-110 North in Baton Rouge to get to U.S. 190 West as an alternate. I-10 East is open.
