Man, dog rescued by Coast Guard

A man and his dog were rescued by a Coast Guard helicopter near Lake Pontchartrain on Tuesday evening after the man’s boat began to take on water.

Shortly after 6 p.m., Tom Wells’ friend contacted the Coast Guard’s New Orleans Sector and told them Wells was unable to keep up with the water intake that was sinking his 12-foot flat boat.

The Coast Guard first located Wells with a 25-foot response boat, but because of the shallow water, the boat was unable to rescue Wells and his dog. Just before 7:30 p.m., the helicopter arrived on the scene and hoisted Wells and his dog out of the water. The two were then flown to the air station where Wells was met by his wife. No injuries were reported.
