Marrero shooting leaves man, 35, dead
Marrero — A 35-year-old Algiers man was gunned down in Marrero on Thursday night, and the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office is seeking a motive and suspect in the shooting.
Peter Carter was found dead in a backyard in the 1900 block of Gladstone Drive, a few doors down from Rue Louis Phillipe. Deputies were responding to reports of gunshots in the area when they found Carter on the ground, sheriff’s spokesman Glen Boyd said.
Witnesses told police that they saw Carter walking with several individuals shortly before the shooting. Witnesses told police they were heading toward a vacant lot next to the backyard where he was found.
Shots rang out, and the witnesses saw the individuals flee the area on foot and then in an unidentified vehicle, police said.
Boyd said investigators are still trying to determine what led to the shooting.
At Carter’s Algiers apartment Friday, neighbors were shocked to learn of his death, noting that he was a quiet, likable fellow who didn’t cause any problems. He’d lived in the neighborhood for about two to three years and was well-known by most people in the area.
Calvin Favors called Carter a friend and said he saw him a few days ago.
Carter had problems recently with a family member breaking down his door and with other domestic issues, but he didn’t seem too troubled, Favors said.
However, Favors warned Carter to stay away from Marrero. He said some of the family members Carter argued with lived in that area, and Favors was concerned that problems might occur. Favors speculated that the dispute was linked to Carter’s death, although he said the issue seemed too minor to result in a death.
“It wasn’t nothing to be killed over,” Favors said. “I told him not to go back there.”
