Police: Grandmother threatened, struck
A man accused of beating his grandmother and pouring hot water on the 87-year-old woman was arrested Tuesday and booked into Parish Prison.
Ernest Girtley, 35, attacked his grandmother just before 10 p.m. Tuesday at her North 49th Street home, Baton Rouge police spokesman Cpl. L’Jean McKneely said.
Girtley pulled the woman from her bed, dragged her through the house and punched her in the face while telling her he was going to kill her, McKneely said.
The elderly woman grabbed her walking cane and hit her grandson in the groin, Mc-Kneely said.
Girtley then took a pot of water he was heating on the stove and threw it on the woman.
The water, which had not yet begun to boil, did not burn the woman, McKneely said.
She was, however, treated for a facial contusion she suffered in the beating.
Girtley, 907 N. 49th St., was booked on one count each of cruelty to the infirm and aggravated second-degree battery.
Authorities arrest 3 on suspicion of DWI
Authorities arrested at least three people suspected of driving while intoxicated in East Baton Rouge Parish and booked them into Parish Prison between 2:30 p.m. Wednesday and 2:30 p.m. Thursday, booking records show.
Those booked and the counts against them:
- Jean Willingham, 51, 4604 Shadeland Drive, third-offense DWI and reckless operation of a vehicle.
- William Riddle, 46, 1115 Willow Creek Drive, Zachary, first-offense DWI, driving with a suspended/revoked license and improper lane usage.
- David Breland, 27, 3152 Nicholson Lake Drive, first-offense DWI.
