Carencro, corps agree on anti-flooding plan

CARENCRO — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said it wants to build a retention pond and clear out a basin that runs through town to ease drainage of floodwaters and help prevent future flooding.

On Tuesday, the corps and city said they had signed an agreement to move ahead with the $5.4 million project.

Carencro has struggled with flooding, most recently in March.

The corps and city officials decided to clear out the Beau Basin Coulee and build a 7-acre retention pond. The corps and the city will work on designing the project.

The plan has been in the works for 12 years.

U.S. Rep. Charles W. Boustany, R-Lafayette, called the plan an important step forward and a priority to make Carencro safe from flooding.
