Baton Rouge man indicted in 1987 rape case

A Baton Rouge man was indicted Wednesday in the 1987 rape of a woman at the Bellemont Hotel on Airline Highway.

An East Baton Rouge Parish grand jury charged Charles Jones, 47, 6648 Ford St., with aggravated rape of a 32-year-old woman on May 21, 1987, in the Caribbean Room of the Bellemont Hotel, 7370 Airline Highway.

Jones was arrested in March 2011 after a test done at the State Police Crime Lab matched Jones’ DNA to DNA evidence collected during the rape investigation 24 years earlier, an affidavit of probable cause says.

Jones hit the woman in the face repeatedly during the sexual assault, the affidavit states.

An aggravated rape conviction carries an automatic sentence of life in prison.

The case has been assigned to state District Judge Chip Moore.
