Alleged Gardere gunman arrested

East Baton Rouge sheriff’s deputies have arrested a man accused of shooting one man to death and wounding another on Ned Avenue near Gardere Lane, an arrest warrant says.

Davontay Kendell Ricks, 20, 5705 Alexander Ave., was booked into Parish Prison Friday on counts of first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder in the slaying of Jermaine Vallery, 22, and the wounding of another man.

The wounded man, who was not named in the warrant, told deputies that about 11:30 p.m. June 26, he and Vallery, 9340 Pascagoula Drive, were talking to Ricks and another man outside 8211 Ned Ave., the warrant says.

The men started arguing, and Ricks walked into an apartment, grabbed a gun, walked back out and opened fire, the warrant says.

The man who was wounded ran to look for help, but collapsed on Skysail Avenue, the warrant says. He was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Detectives found Vallery dead at the intersection of Ned and Port Avenues, the warrant says.

The warrant says .40-caliber bullet casings found at the scene were fired by Vallery from a handgun deputies found on him.

A 9 mm handgun was found near the victim on Skysail, but 9 mm casings found nearby did not match the handgun, the warrant says.

The man with Ricks, John Albert Goza III, 24, is still at large, sheriff’s spokeswoman Casey Rayborn Hicks said in a news release.

Goza, 3216 Seneca St., is wanted on counts of principal to first-degree murder and principal to attempted first-degree murder, Hicks said.

The investigation is ongoing, Hicks said.
