WASHINGTON — Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., announced Tuesday the Lafayette Regional Airport was awarded $1.1 million for runway safety improvements.
The U.S. Department of Transportation funds are part of the larger $28 million effort to make the regional airport safer by the end of 2015 as mandated by the federal government.
The plan is to add at least 1,000 feet of safety areas near runways.
“The Lafayette Regional Airport serves as a critical hub of commerce and travel for Southwest Louisiana,” Landrieu said in a prepared statement. “This $1.1 million investment will allow the Lafayette Airport to continue to provide air travelers with a safe flying experience while fueling the local economy.”
