New Iberia man faces 46 cruelty counts
NEW IBERIA — The Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office arrested a New Iberia man on Thursday accused of animal cruelty after investigators found 24 dogs and 22 pigs living without food or water on property on Jefferson Terrance Boulevard.
Area residents complained about a foul odor and responding deputies found the animals in “atrocious circumstances” and the carcass of a pig, Sheriff’s Office Capt. Ryan Turner said in a news release.
The animals were malnourished and did not have proper shelter, Turner said.
Animal Control officials took the dogs to the Iberia Parish Animal Shelter, Turner said.
The Iberia Parish constable took custody of the pigs, Turner said.
Tora Benoit, 40, 913 Ann St., New Iberia, was booked Wednesday into the Iberia Parish Jail on 46 counts of simple animal cruelty and two counts of aggravated cruelty to animals, Turner said.
