SU updates hazard plan
The draft plan for Southern University, 2012 Hazard Mitigation Plan Update is now available for public review, the university announced Saturday.
Southern, in partnership with International Consulting Group, has been updating the 2007 Hazard Mitigation Plan, which expires Sept. 28.
The plan update is required to be performed every five years and is needed in order to meet the requirements of the federal Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 and ensures the university’s eligibility for certain federal disaster assistance programs, according to a news release issued by the university.
The plan update process includes: identification and profiling of hazards; assessment of risks affecting the planning community; and identification of preventative measures that will reduce the impact of natural hazards in the future, according to the news release.
The plan update is funded by the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness as well as the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Five public meetings were held in order to solicit input from university employees, local residents, stakeholders, private industries, business leaders, parish elected officials, and elected officials from all surrounding municipalities.
The meetings were held at the SU Agricultural Center, Room 138., according to the news release.
Those wishing to review the draft plan may access it on the university website at http://www.subr.edu or by sending email requests to Kevin Johnson, deputy administrator, Southern University Police Department, at kevin_johnson@subr.edu.
Also, hard copies of the plan will also be available for review at the university administration building and at the university library.
Comments may be submitted in writing to Southern University Police Department Attn.: Kevin Johnson, deputy administrator, 801 Harding Blvd., Baton Rouge, La 70813, or by email at kevin_johnson@subr.edu. The deadline to receive all comments and suggestions is May 23, 2012.
A final public meeting to review this draft plan update will be held on May 16 at the SU Agricultural Center, Room 138 from 10 a.m. to noon.
