BR man, 21, indicted in Baker man’s death

A 21-year-old Baton Rouge man was indicted Wednesday in the shooting death of a Baker man near Southern University.

An East Baton Rouge Parish grand jury charged Maurice Cantrell Francis, 3712 Byron St., with second-degree murder in the killing of Lawrence King, 22.

A second-degree murder conviction carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison.

Francis is accused of fatally shooting King during an argument at the intersection of Swan Avenue and Scenic Highway, according to an arrest warrant.

The shooting occurred on the same night as a Southern football game.

The case has been assigned to state District Judge Mike Erwin.
