Police Jury adopts flood zone map

CLINTON — The East Feliciana Police Jury adopted a new parishwide flood zone map Monday that goes into effect April 3.

Jury Administrative Supervisor Joe Rouchon said during a public hearing that the map replaces the preliminary map that became effective July 31, 2009, for East Feliciana Parish’s participation in the national flood insurance program.

The rates for flood insurance are based on the type of flood hazard zone in which a property is located, Rouchon told jurors.

COMMISSION APPOINTMENT: The jury named Russell Hicks, maintenance supervisor for Clinton, to the parish Planning and Zoning Commission on a 4-3 vote.

Louis Kent, Karl Chaney, Edward Brooks and Jason McCray voted in favor of the appointment, while Larry Beauchamp, John Barnett and Keith Mills voted against the measure.

Dwight Hill and jury President Dennis Aucoin did not vote.

The jurors who dissented said they were not voting against Hicks but instead wanted to follow protocol and allow Planning and Zoning Commission members to interview the candidates, then make a recommendation to the jurors.

Kent, however, said it was the jury’s ultimate decision on the appointment. He said he was ready to appoint Hicks and called for the vote.
