Police book man, 53, on count of murder

LAFAYETTE — Police booked Danny Granstaff into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center on Sunday on one count of second-degree murder.

Granstaff, 53, is accused of shooting and killing his brother, Michael Granstaff, 61, of Lafayette, during a Thursday night disturbance.

Police said Danny Granstaff, of Sulphur Springs, shot himself in the leg during the shooting.

He was booked into the jail after being released from a local hospital.

Bail is set at $500,000, according to online jail records.

Locked car foils robbery suspect

LAFAYETTE A Maurice man made off with a drink, cigarettes and cash from a Monday morning armed robbery only to find himself locked out of his get-away car, Lafayette police said in a news release.

The robbery occurred about 1:30 a.m. at 624 E. Kaliste Saloom Road, the police news release said.

The clerk told police the robber entered the store, picked up a beverage from the cooler and approached the counter. The man then pulled out a handgun and demanded money from the register.

He fled the store on foot with cash, a drink and a pack of cigarettes, the news release said.

Shortly afterward, the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office contacted Lafayette police about a suspicious person on a parking lot at an area hotel near the convenience store.

The man had locked his keys inside his vehicle and was sitting next to the vehicle waiting on his mother for a ride, the release said.

The suspect, identified as Nathan Sonnier, 28, of Maurice, was identified in video footage from the store, the police news release said.

Police also recovered a gun, money, cigarettes and the stolen beverage, the news release said.

Sonnier was booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center on one count of armed robbery, the release said.

Police arrest three
in fight, shooting

LAFAYETTE — Police said three people were arrested in a Sunday morning shooting that stemmed from an argument at a downtown night club.

Police arrested a 16-year-old boy on one count of attempted second-degree murder, according to a police news release.

Police also arrested Jermaine Mouton, 18, of Lafayette, and Jon Mouton, 19, of Lafayette, on one count each of principal to attempted second-degree murder, the news release said.

It’s unknown if the Moutons are related.

The shooting occurred about 3 a.m. in the 1200 block of South College Road, the release said.

Two men told officers they were involved in a fight outside of Karma Night Club on Jefferson Street earlier that evening, the police news release said.

The men encountered the same people a second time at a convenience store near Bertrand Drive and West Congress Street, the news release said.

The men told police they fled the area in their vehicle and were chased by the suspects. One of the suspects fired one shot, striking the victims’ vehicle, the release said.

The suspects were arrested shortly afterward, the release said.
