Wear Red contest fires up Cajuns supporters

The University of Louisiana at Lafayette is looking for its 2014 Wear Red Champions and encouraging local businesses to wear red on Friday and submit their photos.

To compete for the title of 2014 Wear Red Champions, groups are encouraged to wear red Friday and post a high-resolution photo of their group to www.facebook.com/RaginCajunsWearRed or email it to WearRed@ louisiana.edu.

Participants should include the number of people wearing red and the number of people employed by the business.

The deadline for entries is Sept. 8; however, the university encourages supporters to wear red every Friday.

The university’s Ragin’ Cajuns football team plays its season opener Saturday against Southern University. Kickoff is at 6 p.m.

Waste not — fans urged to recycle

As a way to reduce waste, the University of Louisiana at Lafayette has made recycling and waste containers available at Cajun Field during home football games at tailgating spots and in high-traffic areas.

Tailgating spots will have green recycling bins and blue trash bins. Inside the stadium, recycling materials will go into red containers, while trash will be stashed in black bins.

UL-Lafayette AmeriCorps students will be on hand to encourage fans to use the bins and to answer any questions.

Recycling materials will be collected and weighed as part of a collegiate recycling contest, the Game Day Challenge.

The university began an on-campus recycling program in 2010, and the Game Day efforts are an expansion of an effort to embrace a “zero waste philosophy,” Gretchen Vanicor, the university’s director of sustainability, said in a news release.

“Conservation of resources and respect for our environment are part of our culture,” Vanicor said. “As a university, one of the things we can do to support those values is to create opportunities for the community to put those principles into action.”
