AMANT — A St. Amant woman was killed late Monday morning in Ascension Parish as she was crossing a state highway moments after checking her mail, State Police reported. The woman, Karen A. Russell, 67, had gone to the mailbox across La. 431 from her house and was returning home when a southbound truck hit her about 11 a.m., said Trooper Jared Sandifer, spokesman for State Police Troop A. Sandifer said Paul J. James, 50, also of St. Amant, the driver of the pickup, was not cited or arrested in the crash. Sandifer said troopers do not believe he was impaired nor had any traffic violations leading up to the crash. Sandifer said James was unable to avoid Russell and hit her with his 2011 Ford F-250. Sandifer said the crash remains under investigation. The crash happened on La. 431 north of La. 934. La. 431 was closed for a time between La. 934 and La. 621 while troopers investigated the crash but the highway has been reopened, Sandifer said.
