  • Advocate staff photo by MATTHEW HINTON-- The Wisner Foundation land in Port Fourchon encompasses 38,000 acres and 9.5 miles of beach along the Gulf of Mexico seen here in Port Fourchon, Thursday, Aug. 8, 2013. The beach used to extend another 3 miles to where the oil platforms are now when the land was made a foundation in 1914 but it has eroded over time. One of the ways the land erodes is by funnels of water seen in the foreground. During high tide the waves dump water over the front of the beach leaving a long puddle or funnel of water behind the beach front. The funnel gradually erodes the land behind it.
