Lorraine Fontenot, Velma Otts, Sidone Nichols and Adeline Guedry brought wireless headphones, universal remote controls, cakes, cookies, books, magazines and money for bingo, all donated by the unit and American Legion Post 81. Forty-five residents played bingo. Sixth District members from Ponchatoula, New Roads, Gonzales, Scotlandville and Springfield participated in the party. Audubon DAR leads capitol wreath event The Wreaths Across America Statehouse Ceremony was held on Dec. 10 when a wreath donated by the Worcester Wreath Co. was placed in the State Capitol rotunda. The John James Audubon Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution sponsors the Louisiana Statehouse Project. Wreaths Across America events took place simultaneously at each state capitol across the country. The fresh balsam fir wreath contained small flags representing each branch of the military. Retired Gen. Ron Richard shared a holiday memory from when he served in the Marines. He told how difficult it is to be away from family and friends during the holidays. Regent Margaret Tyler conducted the Statehouse Project ceremony. A Broadmoor High School Junior ROTC color guard entered with flags. John Gray played the national anthem, “God Bless America” and taps on the trumpet. Secretary of Veterans Affairs Lane Carson presented a proclamation from Gov. Bobby Jindal declaring it Wreaths Across America Day. Chapter members hosted a reception in the Senate Memorial Hall afterward. Wreaths Across America, a nonprofit organization, was formed as an extension of the Arlington Wreath Project, started by Morrill Worcester, owner of the Worcester Wreath Co., in 1992 with the donation and laying of 5,000 Christmas wreaths at Arlington National Cemetery. Wreath sponsorships are available online at http://www.WreathsAcrossAmerica.org. Audubon Kiwanis, KC donate to OLOL The Audubon Kiwanis Club and Knights of Columbus made donations to the Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital on Dec. 20. The club started the Louisiana Regional and State Chili Cook-offs years ago, then they turned sponsorship over to Catholic Radio and Knights of Columbus to benefit the hospital. Audubon members still volunteer with the cook-offs. Eric Miller with Knights of Columbus made a donation from cook-off proceeds, and Rae Phillips, Rick Blackstone, Mike Wascom and Lowell Tilley of the Audubon Kiwanis Club made a donation from the club. Jason Blevins is event chairman for the regional cook-off, scheduled for March 9, and the state cook-off on March 10, each in front of LSU’s John M. Parker Coliseum.
