Set on the grounds of the historic Pitot House along the banks of Bayou St. John, the event transported holiday shoppers back in time to a magical marketplace that featured the wares of local artists and craftsmen. Timed to coincide with the property’s annual citrus harvest, the event presented a wonderfully relaxing option for those seeking to purchase handmade pieces of art as gift items. More than 30 artists participated, along with a selection of restaurants that were also on hand serving up local delicacies throughout the day. For the children, Papa Noel was in attendance to listen to each holiday wish list or pose for a treasured photo keepsake. For the literary buff, there were popular authors available throughout the daylong event to sign copies of newly purchased works that ranged from beloved children’s literature to works on the architectural landscape of our area. From his perch on the second-floor veranda, guitarist and vocalist John Rankin provided the perfect musical accent for the event. According to Pitot House director Elizabeth Burger, more than 500 patrons turned out for the event. “Proceeds generated from vendor fees go to support the Pitot House,” Burger said. As the only Creole country house that is open to public along Bayou St. John, the Pitot House dates back to the early 1800s. It bears the name of the first mayor of New Orleans, James Pitot, who lived there from 1810 to 1819. The property is a National Trust for Historic Preservation Partner Place and falls under the umbrella of the Louisiana Landmarks Society.
