Fla. kidnapping suspect indicted in Lafayette

A man who almost two months ago led police on a miles-long chase on Interstate 10 with a kidnapped Florida girl was indicted Wednesday on charges of attempted murder and criminal damage to property.

A Lafayette Parish grand jury decided there was enough evidence to charge Stephen Myers, 41, with trying to kill the teenage girl he allegedly kidnapped in Tampa, Florida.

Myers, a registered sex offender who remains in the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center, faces one count of attempted second-degree murder and aggravated criminal damage to property, according to the indictment document distributed by the Lafayette Parish District Attorney’s Office.

Myers and his hostage, a 16-year-old girl, were spotted June 19 by an observant cashier at a convenience store in Grosse Tete as Myers and the girl stopped to buy a pack of cigarettes. The clerk, Fawn Domingue, had seen the kidnapped girl’s photo on a television news show earlier that day.

Two men sentenced in 2012 killing

Two Lafayette men who were to stand trial this week in the 2012 shooting death of a former standout high school basketball player at a Taco Bell on West Congress Street pleaded guilty to lessor charges and were sentenced.

Travonte Broussard, 21, pleaded guilty to manslaughter Tuesday in the death of Frederick Joseph III, of New Iberia, just before the jury was selected, according to a news release from the Lafayette Parish District Attorney’s Office.

Broussard, who was originally charged with second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder, was sentenced to 15 years in prison. If convicted of murder, he would have been given a life sentence.

The other man implicated in Joseph’s killing, Nicholas Felix, pleaded guilty to one count of obstruction of justice. Felix, who was originally charged with principal to second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder, was handed a suspended 10-year sentence.

Joseph was a 19-year-old former standout basketball player at Westgate High School who was on summer leave from North Dakota State College of Science when he was killed.

Suspect in university bomb threat indicted

A federal grand jury has indicted a Lafayette man suspected of calling in a bomb threat last month at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, and then trying to use the diversion to rob a Moss Street bank while police were combing university grounds for a bomb that didn’t exist, officials said.

Devin Haywood, 30, of Lafayette, was charged with one count of using a facility in interstate commerce to willfully make a threat or maliciously convey false information and one count of attempted bank robbery, U.S. Attorney Stephanie Finley said in a news release Wednesday.

Haywood faces up to up to 10 years in prison and three years supervised release if he’s convicted on the bomb threat charge, and 20 years combined with five years supervised release if he’s found guilty of the attempted bank robbery.

A conviction on each charge also carries a fine up to $250,000, Finley said.

Agents with the FBI, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the U.S. Marshal’s Service, Louisiana State Police, the Lafayette Police Department, the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office and the UL-Lafayette Police Department investigated the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney John Luke Walker is prosecuting the case.

The bomb threat shut down UL-Lafayette for almost a full day in mid-July.
