Police arrest suspect in Ardenwood shooting

Baton Rouge police arrested a suspect in the fatal Tuesday night shooting of Kedrick Ricard outside of an apartment complex just north of Florida Boulevard on North Ardenwood Drive.

Police identified the suspect Wednesday morning as Eric Johnson, 25, and arrested him later in the day in the 3200 block of Plank Road, said Cpl. L’Jean McKneely, a police spokesman.

Police located Johnson, of 1844 Gayosa Ave., after receiving an anonymous Crime Stoppers tip. He will be booked into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on counts of second-degree murder and illegal use of a weapon, McKneely said.

The shooting remains under investigation, and the details that led to it remain unclear, McKneely said.

However, a cousin of Ricard’s girlfriend said Tuesday night that Ricard, 28, and other family members heard a couple arguing while walking along a sidewalk near the Renaissance Gateway apartments in the 600 block of North Ardenwood Drive. Ricard looked at the couple, which did not sit well with the man who was arguing with the woman, the girlfriend’s cousin said.

The man arguing with the woman then pulled out a handgun, walked behind the group and began firing wildly, he said.

Ricard was at the apartment complex dropping off diapers to his girlfriend for their three young children.

Anyone with information on the shooting is may contact the East Baton Rouge Violent Crimes Unit at (225) 389-4869 or Crime Stoppers at (225) 344-7867.
