LSU AM Report: Fournette added to group; Mustang package arrives

Scene setting

- LSU began its third day of fall camp Wednesday with a sun-bathed practice. Mostly veterans and starters were in the morning group, but there was a new addition to AM drills …

Observations

- Fournette for breakfast: Running back Leonard Fournette, the No. 1-ranked recruit in the nation, went through the morning portion of practice for the first time this fall camp. Fournette had been practicing with the afternoon group (mostly freshmen and reserves). Coach Les Miles says not to determine much from who practices when. Still, LSU’s highly touted rookie running back went through drills with starter Terrence Magee. The two stood next to each other and went through drills consecutively – first Magee and then Fournette.

- Mustang: LSU ran its Mustang package (six defensive backs and three linemen) for the first time in front of reporters this fall camp. Media members are allowed to view a 10-20 minute window of individual drills each practice. As expected Dwayne Thomas served as the primary charging defensive back in defensive coordinator John Chavis’ famed defensive set. Jalen Mills was the other extra defensive back during the drill, and freshman Jamal Adams joined the second group at safety on the Mustang. Kwon Alexander and D.J. Welter were the first linebackers during the drill, and Daniell Hunter, Jermauria Rasco and Christian LaCouture were the first D-line. “Finish it!” Chavis yelled at one point.

- Personnel: Excluding Fournette, some of the same freshmen who have gone through the morning practice over the last two days were back. They include Adams, receivers Malachi Dupre and Tony Upchurch, and linebacker Clifton Garrett. DE Davon Godchaux was not present, as he had been the last two days. He’ll likely run with the afternoon group. Quarterback Anthony Jennings, as expected, was the quarterback. Jennings and freshman Brandon Harris have been rotating between the afternoon and morning practices.
