Officers first observed Damien Lewis, 36, after 10 p.m. Monday, swerving in and out of lanes without signaling in the 2300 block of Evangeline Street, according to the affidavit of probable cause. Lewis stopped initially, but when officers spoke to him through his front window, he sped off through a red light at Scenic Highway and Hollywood Drive and continued to flee, often at 20 mph over posted limits, running through stop signs and traffic signals, the affidavit says. Officers managed to stop him again, this time on Hollywood Drive, but then he accelerated at a group of officers, forcing them to jump out of his path, the affidavit says. Lewis finally stopped in his driveway at 2254 71st St., but wouldn’t obey commands to exit the car, requiring officers to force him from the vehicle, the affidavit says. Lewis, who has an extensive record including arrests on narcotics, firearms and resisting officer counts, was booked into Parish Prison on counts of attempted first-degree murder of a police officer, careless operation, failure to signal, aggravated flight from officers and possession of Schedule III drugs. Authorities book three on suspicion of DWI Authorities arrested at least three people suspected of driving while intoxicated in East Baton Rouge Parish and booked them into Parish Prison between 2:30 p.m. Monday and 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, booking records show.
