Deputies who responded reported that the driver, Adrione Manuel, of New Iberia, appeared to be intoxicated, Sheriff Louis Ackal said. He also punched a hospital employee during treatment and faces imprisonment on counts of simple battery and resisting an officer, Ackal said. The accident occurred at 11 p.m. when Manuel’s 2006 Honda ran off Ozenne Road in the 7100 block into a ditch, then continued on in the ditch for about 150 feet before slamming into a tree, Ackal said. Neither child was wearing their seat belt, Ackal said. Manuel and the 4-year-old were transported to a Lafayette hospital with minor injuries while the 8-year-old suffered more serious injuries. After his release from the hospital, Manuel was booked into Iberia Parish Jail on two counts each of vehicle negligent injury, no child restraint and child endangerment and one count each of driving while intoxicated and careless operation. Deputies are waiting for the results of a toxicology test, Ackal said. The crash remains under investigation.
