A family moving from its Casper Street home left for a while, but returned about 4 a.m. to find the house on fire, the Baton Rouge Fire Department said. When firefighters arrived, flames were coming from the rear of the house where about half the home was burning intensely, fire department spokesman Mark Miles said in a news release. Firefighters got the fire under control, but the house was a total loss. Damage to the building and contents amounted to about $42,000, the release says. The first fire occurred about 3:30 a.m. in an apartment building at 1300 North St. Flames were shooting from a window on the second floor in the back of the building when firefighters arrived, Miles said. Firefighters quickly got the fire under control, containing it to one room. Damage to the structure, estimated at $200,000, was $20,000.
