A St. Martin Parish grand jury on Thursday charged Chrystal Alexander with second-degree murder. She was a lieutenant in the Sheriff’s Office. Alexander is accused of killing Kendall Alexander, 34, at the couple’s residence at Potpourri South Apartments on Dec. 29. Alexander appeared at a video hearing Friday morning in the Lafayette Parish Courthouse. State district court Commissioner Thomas Frederick set Alexander’s bail at $150,000. It was unclear when or if Alexander would be transferred to the St. Martin Parish jail. Chester Cedars, assistant district attorney for St. Martin Parish, said Alexander will be arraigned Aug. 5. State Police took over the investigation almost immediately after Kendall Alexander was killed, then handed the report to Cedars and other prosecutors in the 16th Judicial District. From the beginning of the investigation, detectives believed Chrystal Alexander shot her husband. They just didn’t know the details. According to court records, the Alexanders had a tumultuous relationship. In 2005, before they were married, she filed for a restraining order to keep him away. She claimed he grabbed her hair and hit her after she told him she wouldn’t marry him. Kendall Alexander also faced problems at work. He was a Breaux Bridge police officer charged in December 2007 in a 23-count indictment that alleged he was an accessory after the fact in a financial fraud case that involved four others. Chrystal Alexander was not part of the investigation. Kendall Alexander later pleaded guilty to one count of malfeasance in office, receiving a suspended sentence of three years in prison at hard labor. The episode ended his law enforcement career. It was unclear Friday whether Chrystal Alexander has an attorney.
