Some of the accomplishments of the Southern University Band under Lawrence Jackson’s tenure:

2006: Performs before some 70,000 fans on Aug. 25, 2006, in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome for the New Orleans Saints’ first home game in the Mercedes Benz Superdome on Aug. 25, 2006, after the team was after being displaced by Hurricane Katrina

2007: Performs at halftime of the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks game

2008: Performs in California against the University of Southern California Trojan Marching Band; Southern University Marching Band was named the No. 1 Best Dressed Band in the nation, followed by the marching bands at Ohio State University and the University of Michigan; featured on the CBS Sports website with the Ohio State University Marching Band as the top two college marching bands in the nation

2009: Featured on a sports website for performance captivating the audience at the Southern vs. University of Louisiana at Lafayette game with its halftime of tribute to Michael Jackson. The YouTube video received more than 250,000 views.

2010: The Southern University Band Department Expands from to two concert units; This was a first for the band program; performs at halftime for the New Orleans Saints’ first NFC Championship game; performs at Honda Battle of the Bands, an invitational showcase of performances for black college marching bands, in Atlanta’s Georgia Dome

2011: The Southern University Drumline performs in the North African countries of Morocco and Algeria; band performs at the Washington, D.C., Mardi Gras Ball

2012: Pop music icon Madonna selects SU’s Dancing Dolls to perform with her during the Super Bowl halftime show; Madonna discovered the Dancing Dolls through a performance on YouTube; the band performs with Doug E. Fresh and Chaka Khan at the Atlanta Classic; performs with Trombone Shorty at the Bayou Classic

2013: The Southern University Marching band was Performs at Super Bowl pregame show, marking the eighth time the band or an auxiliary of the band, had is part of the Super Bowl; featured in Jonas Brothers video, “Pom Poms”; performs at swearing-in ceremony for Bernette Johnson, the first black woman to serve as chief justice of the Louisiana Supreme Court

2014: Southern University Marching Band ranked No. 2 marching band in the NCAA. The band was the only Historically Black College Marching Band ranked; the band also became the first marching band to perform at the New Orleans’ Krewe of Zulu’s ball
