Convenience store owner booked with distributing drugs in Slaughter

Narcotics agents shut down an over-the-counter illegal narcotics operation in a Slaughter convenience store this week, just days before the owner was preparing to open a second location in East Baton Rouge Parish, East Feliciana Parish Sheriff Talmadge Bunch said Wednesday.

The Delta Narcotics Task Force, which includes deputies of the East Feliciana Parish Sheriff’s Office, arrested Ahmed Hussein Mana, 45, the owner of My Fair Mart, 1711 La. 67 in East Feliciana Parish.

A three-month investigation culminated with Mana’s arrest Monday. Agents were able to confirm that Mana was accepting cash, credit cards and debit cards for the prescription medications, “and it is suspected that he may also have accepted payment from individuals using personal checks and Louisiana Purchase Cards,” Bunch said.

“Mr. Mana was selling prescription medication while he was present at the store, most often while standing at the cash register,” Bunch said.

Bunch said agents searched the store and found 85 hydrocodone pills and a stolen gun, both behind the counter of the store in proximity to one another. In a storage area of the store, agents also discovered 5 ounces of cathinone, also known as “khat,” as well as cash and other items relative to the investigation.

In addition, agents searched another location at 24110 Reames Road in Pride, where it is believed that Mana is going to open another convenience store in the coming weeks. A search of the store on Reames Road found 350 more hydrocodone pills, 40 morphine pills and four Alprazolam pills, Bunch said.

State Police assisted in the investigation, which remains ongoing. Additional arrests are possible.

Mana, whose address was not immediately available, was booked into the East Feliciana Parish Prison on three counts of distribution of Schedule II drugs, hydrocodone; one count of possession with intent to distribute Schedule II drugs, hydrocodone; one count of possession of Schedule I drugs; one count of possession of a firearm while in possession of a controlled dangerous substance; and one count of possession of a stolen firearm.

State Police will book Mana into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on the narcotics that were found at the Reames Road address. His counts include possession with intent to distribute Schedule II drugs, possession with intent to distribute Schedule III drugs and possession with intent to distribute Schedule IV drugs.
