Acadiana crime blotter for June 24, 2014

A 29-year-old New Iberia man was killed early Monday after his car veered off the road, struck a ditch, went airborne and smashed into a tree, Iberia Parish authorities said.

Joshua Hymel died at the scene of the 5:35 a.m. crash on an Iberia Parish road, Sheriff’s Office Lt. Jeremy Kelley said in a news release.

Hymel was driving a white Toyota Yaris north in the 4100 block of Leonce Theriot Road when, investigators believe, he veered off the road as he tried to pass a vehicle, Kelley said.

Toxicology samples were sent to the Acadiana Crime Lab for testing, and the accident remains under investigation, Kelley said.

Crowley residents assist officers in theft busts

With the help of residents who relayed information to police on a fleeing suspect, Crowley police on Saturday arrested a Lake Charles man and a juvenile in a rash of Crowley historic district burglaries.

Police are searching for two additional suspects in the break-ins.

Jarius Watson, 22, was arrested after residents reported the break-in then relayed logistical information to police dispatchers as one suspect tried to escape pursuing police, Chief K.P. Gibson said.

Also arrested Saturday was a 16-year-old boy apprehended a short distance from where Watson was arrested, Gibson said.

Watson was booked into the Crowley jail on seven counts of burglary. The juvenile was arrested on one count of burglary. The arrests occurred at 12:45 p.m. near the intersection of North Avenue K and East Eighth Street.

“The difference in solving these cases is the direct involvement of the citizens as well as the hard work of our personnel,” Gibson said in a prepared statement.

Police also are seeking Trevvor Lewis, 21, and James Martin, 17, both of Crowley, in the burglary ring. Lewis is wanted on seven counts, and Martin on one, Gibson said.
