George O’Neal Bridge closed for repairs George O’Neal Bridge closed for repairs Officials: Fixes could take several days Advocate staff report June 19, 2014 Comments The George O’Neal Bridge, a high-traffic bridge between Kennesaw Drive and Antioch Boulevard, was closed Thursday for repairs that could take a number of days. While inspecting the bridge’s damaged guard rails, officials with the Department of Public Works noticed that soil had begun to wash out from beneath the road on either end of the bridge, said Tom Stephens, chief design engineer for the Department of Public Works. An assessment on Friday will determine how many more days the road will be closed. “Our crews deal with this kind of repair on a regular basis. They know how to do it, but they can’t do it without closing the road,” Stephens said. The bridge is more than 40 years old and is 19 feet from end to end. It has wooden parts that likely will need repairs in about five years, Stephens said. The suggested detour is to take O’Neal Lane to South Harrell’s Ferry Road to Woodlake Drive and Monitor Avenue, Public Works officials said.
