Acadiana Crime Blotter for June 14, 2014

A Sunset man was booked Thursday in the fatal shooting of a man who pulled his vehicle over to give the suspect a ride and the attempted murder of the female passenger.

James Vincent Jones Jr., 40, is accused of killing Joseph Collins, 43, at 2:25 p.m. Thursday. The woman, riding in the front seat of Collins’ car, told investigators the shooting happened after Collins stopped in the 100 block of Michaud Road to let Jones in, according to a news release from the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office.

The female passenger said that “for unknown reasons Jones shot Collins once and then fled from the vehicle on foot,” Capt. Craig Stansbury said in the release.

The woman in the car was not injured, Stansbury said.

Jones was found a short time later on Legends Lane in Carencro.

Jones was booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center on one count each of second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder. Jones remained in jail Friday. Bail was set at a total of $375,000 for both counts.

A motive for the shooting remained unknown Friday afternoon.

Fourth suspect nabbed in home invasion

A Lafayette woman booked earlier this week in a May 15 home invasion in Cankton remained in St. Landry Parish Jail on Friday.

Jessica Rose-Puckett, 26, is the last of four suspects wanted in the case, according to a St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office news release issued Friday.

Rose-Puckett was booked Wednesday into the parish jail on counts of attempted first-degree murder, home invasion, false imprisonment with a firearm and criminal conspiracy.

The victim told investigators that two gun-carrying men broke into his home on Billeaux Road, beat him and bound his arms behind his back, Capt. Megan Vizena had said at the time of the first arrest.

“The victim stated that he overheard the subjects planning to cut his throat and that’s when he was able to break loose and run for help,” Vizena said.

Bail for Rose-Puckett was set at $750,000.

Previously arrested in the case were three Carencro men: Benneth Barras, 26, Reginald K. Francis, 27, and Shane Pomier, 28.

The arrests were made in a joint effort with the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Marshals Office.

McClellan was booked into the Iberia Parish Jail, where he remained Friday without bail.
