Carencro man booked in Michaud Road fatal shooting

A Carencro man was booked on one count each of murder and attempted murder for allegedly shooting and killing another man who officials say pulled his vehicle over to give the suspect a ride.

James Jones Jr. is accused of killing Joseph Collins, 43. A witness riding in the front seat of Joseph Collins’ car said the shooting happened after Collins stopped in the 100 block of Michaud Road to let Jones in.

The female passenger in the car said that “for unknown reasons Jones shot Collins once and then fled from the vehicle on foot,” Capt. Craig Stansbury said in release.

Collins, 43, died as a result of the shooting. The woman in the car was not injured, Stansbury said.

Jones was found later on Legends Lane in Carencro.

Jones was booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center on one count each of second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder. Jones remained in jail Friday on bail of $375,000 for both counts.

A motive for the shooting remained unknown Friday afternoon.
