Dispute over girl leads to murder charge against BR teen

A Baton Rouge teen was charged Wednesday with murder in the Feb. 11 fatal shooting of another teen in a dispute over a woman.

Jamal Variste, 18, is accused of killing Devonta Jenks, also 18, in a fit of jealousy outside a Denham Street apartment complex in north Baton Rouge.

An East Baton Rouge Parish grand jury indicted Variste, 1734 N. 27th St., on a second-degree murder charge Wednesday.

Variste allegedly confronted Jenks because he was jealous of Jenks’ relationship with a woman who lived at the apartment complex, police said. The woman was about six months pregnant with Jenks’ child at the time of his death, according to an affidavit of probable cause.

Jenks, who was shot in the chest, ran a short distance and collapsed on a sidewalk outside the Spanish Arms Apartments, where he died.

Variste faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison if found guilty of second-degree murder. His case has been assigned to state District Judge Richard Anderson.
