The American Red Cross shelter that opened on Wednesday night at the Lamar Dixon Expo Center Gym in Gonzales, is now closed.

The shelter at 9039 South St. Landry Avenue was opened for residents who were forced from their homes by flooding, but through the night the shelter population remained at zero.

Although the shelter is closed, the Red Cross will continue to assist flood victims in South Louisiana. Red Cross disaster assessment volunteers will visit the areas that were impacted by the floods to determine the damage to the homes. Red Cross volunteers will distribute clean-up kits to residents that need the supplies.
