A 48-year-old Holden man died early Monday after a crash on La. 22 east of La. 937 near the Diversion Canal in Ascension Parish, State Police said.

Lawrence M. Lambert was not wearing a seat belt and suffered fatal injuries, Trooper First Class Jared Sandifer said in a news release.

The wreck occurred about 2:45 a.m. Lambert was driving a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado eastbound when, for unknown reasons, he failed to make it around a right-hand curve and his car ran off the road, went through a ditch and struck a protection levee, causing the car to flip onto its roof, Sandifer said.

It was unclear whether the driver was impaired. A toxicology sample was taken and submitted to the State Police Crime Lab for analysis, Sandifer said.

Excessive speed is considered to be a factor in the crash, Sandifer said.
