Lafayette crime blotter for May 25, 2014

Lafayette Parish sheriff’s deputies arrested a Texas couple Saturday accused in the fatal shooting of a 30-year-old man early Tuesday morning near Scott.

Deputies arrested Sergio Vasquez, 30, and Magdalena Rojas, 20, after the Rosenberg, Texas, couple confessed to the killing of 30-year-old Martin Dominguez, said Capt. Craig Stansbury, a Sheriff’s Office spokesman.

The couple told detectives in Texas that they drove to the Lafayette area Monday night and fatally shot Dominguez, whom they had a “volatile relationship” with, Stansbury said.

Dominguez was found with multiple gunshot wounds lying outside his apartment in the Iles des Cannes apartment complex near Scott shortly before 1 a.m. Tuesday, the Sheriff’s Office has said. Dominguez died at the scene.

Vasquez and Rojas were booked into the Fort Bend County Jail, southwest of Houston, on counts of second-degree murder, Stansbury said. Both are awaiting extradition to Lafayette.

Man robs yogurt shop Saturday in Lafayette

Lafayette police on Saturday were looking for a man who cut off the power to a yogurt shop before entering the store and robbing employees at gunpoint.

The robbery happened about noon Saturday at the Yogurtland near the intersection of East Kaliste Saloom Road and West Pinhook Road, said Cpl. Paul Mouton, a police spokesman.

Employees told police that the man shut off electricity to the store before coming inside armed with a pistol. Employees handed him an undisclosed amount of cash before the man fled, Mouton said.

Witnesses told investigators that the man wore a traffic vest, dark pants, work boots and a bandana over his face during the robbery. No one was injured.

Saturday home invasions investigated

Lafayette police are investigating two Saturday morning home invasions in which several people were robbed of money and other belongings at gunpoint.

Police do not believe the two incidents are connected, said Cpl. Paul Mouton, a police spokesman — although police haven’t ruled out that possibility.

The first incident happened about 2 a.m. in the 400 block of Sunbeam Lane when four black men broke into the home through a rear window armed with guns and knives, Mouton said.

The men stole phones and money from the six people inside the home, Mouton said. Afterward, the robbers fled on foot.

No one was injured in the robbery.

About an hour and a half later, four men dressed in all black and armed with pistols entered an apartment in the 900 block of Lamar Street where two people were inside, Mouton said.

The intruders struck both people already inside the apartment in the head and began to search the residence. A pistol and some electronics were stolen from the apartment, Mouton said.

Hearing the commotion, two neighbors went over to the apartment and were robbed of their cellphones and money, Mouton said. The four robbers fled the apartment.

The two people who were struck in the head were taken to a hospital and treated for their injuries, Mouton said.

Police ask anyone with information about this incidents to call them or Crime Stoppers at (337) 232-8477.

Man robbed, shot after posting photo online

Lafayette police said a man was robbed at gunpoint Friday night about 20 minutes after he posted a picture of himself holding cash on a social media website.

The robbery happened at a hair salon in the 1300 block of 12th Street about 11:40 p.m., said Cpl. Paul Mouton, a police spokesman.

Shortly after the man posted the picture of himself online — police would not release the specific website — two men entered the shop armed with handguns, Mouton said.

As the man who posted the picture fled toward the back of the shop, one of the men who had just entered fired multiple gunshots, striking the fleeing man once in the back, Mouton said.

The injured man, no age available, was in stable condition at a hospital on Saturday afternoon, Mouton said.

The two men left the hair shop Friday night on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash. During the robbery, the two men wore black clothing with white T-shirts covering their faces, Mouton said.

Police ask anyone with information about this incident to call them or Crime Stoppers at (337) 232-8477.
