May 29, 2014 06:54 Lafayette Concert Band sets Memorial Day concert Lafayette Concert Band sets Memorial Day concert Advocate staff report May 29, 2014 Comments The Lafayette Concert Band will host a free Memorial Day concert at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at The Bayou Church on Kaliste Saloom Road. Gerald Guilbeaux will lead the 70-member adult community band in performing its annual “Songs of Remembrance” concert, dedicated to veterans of the U.S. military. “We try to include music that represents our past history: music from the Civil War era through the Korean conflict and our special tribute with a brand-new piece,” said Guilbeaux in a news release. The concert band debuts a new work, Brian Balmages’ “Joy of Life.” Commissioned by the band, the piece will be performed in dedication to recently deceased Lafayette Concert Band members Elton Gray Wade and Fred Christiansen. Memorial Day service Fountain Memorial Funeral Home & Cemetery will hold its annual Memorial Day Service at 9 a.m. Monday at 1010 Pandora St. The hourlong service will feature patriotic music selections and a gun salute by the Knights of Columbus, as well as a taps performance by VFW Post 9822. Lawn chairs are welcomed. A reception follows the service in the funeral home lounge. No Memorial Day bus service The Lafayette Transit System will not operate Monday in observance of Memorial Day, according to city-parish government. Regular scheduled transit services will resume on Tuesday. Memorial Day trash schedule Allied Waste and the Recycling Foundation will run their regular routes on Memorial Day in Lafayette, according to an announcement from Lafayette city-parish government. Lafayette’s compost facility on Dugas Road closed at noon on Friday and will remain closed through Memorial Day.
