George Rodrigue tribute approved

Louisiana lawmakers passed legislation that would name a portion of U.S. 90 in Iberia Parish after Cajun artist George Rodrigue, most known for his iconic “Blue Dog” paintings.

In 2011, the artist presented his latest painting, ‘No. 1 LSU Fan,’ featuring the blue dog in an LSU football jersey with the number 1 on it following an unveiling of the painting at the Shaw center for the Arts in Baton Rouge.

Rodrigue, 69, died in December after a long bout with cancer.

The state Senate unanimously passed House Bill 402, which already was approved in the House and will be shipped to Gov. Bobby Jindal.

HB402 would rename the overpass at the intersection of U.S. 90 and La. 83 after Rodrigue and direct the state Department of Transportation and Development to erect signage recognizing the new name.
