She is interim president of Shelton State Community College in Tuscaloosa, Ala.The board overseeing Louisiana’s two-year schools has appointed Joan Yvette Davis as the new chancellor of Delgado Community College. “I hope all of us will treat her with the love and respect we are so well known for,” said Louisiana Community and Technical College System board member Robert Brown at a meeting Wednesday. Davis, interim president of Shelton State Community College in Tuscaloosa, Ala., was not at the meeting. She was one of three finalists who participated in on-campus sessions last month. Former Delgado chancellor Monty Sullivan, who left to head the Louisiana Community and Technical College System, said Davis had a board meeting in Alabama that she had to attend. “I am honored to have been selected chancellor of Delgado Community College, and I greatly appreciate Dr. Sullivan’s and the Board’s appointment,” Davis said in a prepared statement provided by the college. “A wonderful stage has been set by my predecessors for my work with faculty and staff in moving Delgado to the next level and beyond in providing quality academic and workforce training for the greater New Orleans community.” Board member Tim Hardy said that the search for a new chancellor weighed the needs of faculty, administrators, students and other stakeholders. “Everybody was included,” he said. Before her interim post at Shelton State, Davis was director of the Alabama Technology Network’s Montgomery/Selma Center. Other roles she’s held have included general counsel and vice chancellor for the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education and interim chancellor of the Alabama Community College System. Davis grew up in Tuscaloosa and has degrees from Bennett College in North Carolina and the University of Alabama School of Law. She practiced law for more than 20 years in Alabama, Georgia and Florida. Follow Elizabeth Crisp on Twitter @elizabethcrisp.
