WBR deputies looking for shooter who killed woman and her dog

West Baton Rouge Parish sheriff’s deputies were searching Tuesday for a person who shot and killed a woman and her dog Monday in a Port Allen mobile home park.

Kerry Palmer, 44, 1534 U.S. 190 West, Lot 58, Port Allen, had been shot and left wounded when she was found Monday lying outside her mobile home at Dude’s Trailer Park, Sheriff Mike Cazes said. Sheriff’s deputies were called to the park at about 5 p.m. after residents reported hearing gunshots.

Palmer was taken to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead shortly after her arrival, he said. Palmer’s dog had been shot and killed, Cazes said.

Investigators initially thought the shooting might have stemmed from a domestic situation, Cazes said, but later obtained information indicating the shooting may have been a robbery.

The sheriff gave few details on the person authorities are searching for but said DNA evidence they think could be from the alleged shooter has been sent to the State Police’s Crime Lab for processing.

Cazes said witnesses reported hearing shots fired, then seeing a black male running to a green pickup truck and leaving the crime scene at a high rate of speed.

“We are steady interviewing witnesses at the present time,” Cazes said. “We’re asking for people with any information to please come forward if they say anything. Anything that can help bring closure to this.”
