Hayes breaks record with 10 concerts in 24 hours

Country music star, multi-Grammy nominee and Breaux Bridge native Hunter Hayes broke the Guinness World Records record this weekend for most concerts played in multiple cities in the span of 24 hours.

Hayes, 22, who will perform May 25 in Baton Rouge at Bayou Country Superfest, began his record-breaking run of 10 shows in New York City’s Times Square on Friday during the morning broadcast of “Good Morning America.”

He continued to Boston and Worcester, Massachusetts.; Providence, Rhode Island.; New London, New Haven and Stamford, Connecticut.; South Orange and Asbury Park, New Jersey.; and Philadelphia.

Dubbed the “24 Hour Road Race to End Child Hunger,” Hayes staged the marathon concert tour in cooperation with ConAgra Foods’ “Child Hunger Ends Here” program.

Oklahoma rock band The Flaming Lips previously held the record for most concerts played in multiple cities within 24 hours. The Flaming Lips won the title in 2012 by playing eight cities from Memphis, Tennessee, to New Orleans, including Baton Rouge, where the group played a quick show at the Varsity Theatre.

“I cannot believe how much fun this whole day has been and that it’s only been a day!” Hayes said in a statement released Saturday afternoon by his company. “Ten shows in 24 hours with the best fans in the world and a great cause with Child Hunger Ends Here. I’m so proud to get to work with them and all the sponsors. Thank you to all the fans for not only making history with us but also making this whole thing absolutely awesome!”

Atlantic Records released Hayes’ latest album, “Storyline,” on May 6. “Storyline” follows the singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist’s self-titled Atlantic debut, released in 2011. “Hunter Hayes” sold more than a million copies, yielding three consecutive No. 1 singles and total sales of more than 8 million singles.

A recipient of four Grammy Award nominations, Hayes performed more than 500 shows since 2011, headlining sold-out venues in the U.S. and Canada.

He’s been performing since his early childhood.
