How cold was it? Record-breaking, but above freezing

That chill in the air that greeted Baton Rouge residents Wednesday morning, though above freezing, was low enough to set a record for this date.

The temperature dropped to 37 degrees in Baton Rouge, breaking a record of 39 set for this date in 1983, said meteorologist Shawn O’Neil of the National Weather Service office in Slidell.

Around south Louisiana, other places flirted with records, but New Orleans Audubon Park was the only other one that made it, tying a record of 46 degrees set in 1962, O’Neil said.

Temperatures throughout the area should rise into the mid-60s Wednesday afternoon, he said. The forecast calls for 66 degrees in Baton Rouge and 64 in New Orleans.

“In a couple of months everybody is going to wish this day would come back,” O’Neil said. “I’m enjoying it for sure.”
