Elderly affairs bill clears the House

A bill setting up the framework for a state Department of Elderly Affairs zipped through the Louisiana House Monday.

Officials with parish councils on aging were on hand for House Bill 246’s advancement to the state Senate. The House voted 92-0 in favor of the bill.

The key vote comes Tuesday, when the House is scheduled to tackle House Bill 1256. HB1256 would shuffle the state Department of Children and Family Services into the state Department of Health and Hospitals, making room for an elderly affairs agency to actually open its doors.

HB1256 addresses prohibitions against more than 20 executive branch departments existing.
