Woman, 21, found dead in Girard Park

Police say they have not ruled out foul play in death in death

Lafayette police are investigating what they are calling a suspicious death of a 21-year-old woman whose body was found early Sunday in a drainage ditch near a pond in Girard Park.

Cpl. Paul Mouton, a police spokesman, said detectives, who say the death is suspicious, have not ruled out foul play in the death of the woman, whose identity is being withheld pending notification of family members.

The victim had planned to meet some friends on Stewart Street in downtown Lafayette on Saturday night, but when she never showed, her friends became worried, Mouton said.

Her friends called her cellphone after not hearing from her for about three hours and a man answered, saying he found the phone in the park, Mouton said. The friends drove to Girard Park, took the phone from the two men and called police.

Officers found the woman’s vehicle in the parking lot and located her body in the drainage ditch, Mouton said.

Police are looking for the two men who found the phone and have asked that they contact police.

Mouton said the men are not persons of interest and detectives just want to talk to them to see if they have more information about the phone.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Lafayette police at (337) 291-8600 or Crime Stoppers at (337) 232-8477.
