Police: Neighbors hear shots, body found in canal near Washington Avenue

Baton Rouge police are investigating the shooting death of a 38-year-old Baton Rouge man whose body was found Tuesday morning in a canal behind some houses just south of Washington Avenue, Cpl. L’Jean McKneely Jr. said.

Police identified the victim Tuesday afternoon as Alexander Jason Scott, 3836 Adams Ave., which is just a few blocks away from where his body was found.

When reached Tuesday night, family members declined comment.

Neighbors told police they heard several gunshots about 8 p.m. Monday night, McKneely said.

Scott was found in the canal by residents of the area about 7:30 a.m. The canal sees a lot of foot traffic, McKneely said.

East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner Beau Clark said his office will conduct an autopsy on Wednesday.
